Ahh.. The good ole days when chevy dodge and ford all made good trucks that ran for ten years and then some. They need to bring back the big iron.

Make sure you use a good high pressure oil pump. Not high volume, high pressure. Engine needs min of 50-75 psi IIRC.Melling make a high vol one that doesn't put out a enough pressure. The lower end on these Clevland Mods were weak. Just my experience. I rebuilt many many of them. Upside is the heads breathe very well even the 2v heads. A 4bbl intake gives it a nice boost.

I have owned several of them, like said the bottom ends are weak. Ah hell the whole engine IMO is weak. They are tough as they will take a beating but all the small blocks and FE's i have owned would out perform the M engine hands down. Another tough engine that i hate is the ole 300 six, tough as nails but for the power and gas milage i would rather have the 302/351W.

I dunno, I worked with a guy that had a nicely built 300 six, -and the thing ran like a scalded cat.

I also had one in my work truck back in the early 90's, -the dang thing got ABUSED daily, -and had well over 400k on it.

The only downside on my ol' '84 f-150 was that it would go through ignition modules like clockwork, -and I always kept a spare in the glovebox!!

That was a great old truck, -it would trash front tires with the twin-beam front end (typical for f-series trucks of that era). Aside from the ignition modules going out, that ol' truck just wouldn't quit!

You're right about the mileage, -neither one of my 300's did well on fuel, -but with the torquiness they have, they sure were fun to drive.

Good info. Kinda late to bring this back up but I love the 400's and 351 M's. I've owned 4 in the past and built all of them myself. To extend rod bearing life you can also have the oil serts in the mains drilled and a bigger one welded in and resurfaced. I believe they say that exteds the life of the main bearings in the 400's by alot.

I know of 2 "M" fords that have well over 200K miles and running strong both of which kicked the Dog piss out of my 351W.

But i ain't shorting the 351W at all tho that 351W Trashed many 302's ! That motor was still running strong after that useless E40D puked at 155K miles, but i wasn't going to drop any more into that truck so when the trans went it got replaced by the GMC K2500 diesel. ... .

My lil'Brother has that 351W EFI stuffed into his GT stang and he's been putting the smack down on some ricers on the ave. .

If I did it all again a bigblock is the way to go. 460 bolt to same bellhousing as M . Can't remember the name of the company but was in the back of most 4x4 mags that sold conversion motor/alt braket mounts to drop a 460 in place of a 351/400m. Was my biggest regret with the truck show in my other post. Puked atleast 4 "M" motors in that truck. Only good thing was at the time they were abundant and cheap. don't know why I never just did the 460 swap. I had it in my head back then keeping everything factory was better.Not. Course now I'd build that same exact truck again but make a powerstroke fit. If i could only win that damn lottery...
