Advance Auto parts, 5 quarts of mobil -1 and mobil -1 filter for 29.99.

I picked up 10quarts, and 2 filters for 62 bux.... can't beat it.

They had a similar deal at Autozone last month. However, Autozone doesn't carry the diesel-rated Mobil 1.

-Rob :)

I've been using the Mobil 15W-40 that has been on sale at Walmart for $10 a gallon, takes two of them (8 quarts) to fill my truck with a 2 quart Wix filter.

I know It's probably meaning less and maybe the stuff is differnt now but I have always had a bad taste in my mouth from that stuff. My Father back in 1977 bought a brand new F-250 from Ford. He ran nothing but Mobil one in it and the timing chain went at 45k and then the engine around 55k. he blamed the oil. Of course I was about 15 yrs old so who knows if that was what really killed it.

I think the've come a long way since "77"........Thier oil filters are supposed to be very good and the Mobil1 synthetic oil has a good rep.

Yeah Like I said that like 25 yrs ago. it just always stuck in my mind and I have never used it since. nothing wrong with it

All the autozones near me had it, M1 Turbo diesel 5w40. I bought enough for 8 oil changes:D
Now I will hit the advanced stores and do the same.

I like it, and the 6 year old Interstates that were on my truck when I bought it are still cranking over as strong and fast as possible ....

Synthetic oil has come a LONG LONG way in the last 10 years, not to mention 30.

And IIRC Made in USA. (Hopefully from someone who gives a damn)

I have stayed away from the synth stuff all together Just because ?????????/

Old school I guess.

The 94 Burb (still have it) had been run with Amzoil HD diesel marine or ?? or some such since it was new.

When the head gasket blew at 237K (Ebay purchase at 230K) I did a complete O'Haul and the engine looked good inside but the pistons, bearings and crank were no better than I had/have seen from rigs using regular petroleum based oils.

Bearings showed wear into a couple layers in the upper rod shells and lower main shells.

Nothing outstanding that would convince me to run out and buy the Synth oils for the extra $$$$$

Just my 2 cents worth

And so has Dino Oil Rotella & Delo more specifically, I ran them for years as do many OTR rigs, it 's what I run in my C1500 Burb; that said, I'm running Amsoil synthetic in the K1500 since it runs GA to MS bi-weekly and every mpg improvement there, is a huge plus for me, the Amsoil seems to have a better mpg than the Rotella did when I was running it, I don't have any quantitative data to back that; just some non conclusive observations.

Here's the real deal with my expereience. When you hear how LIGHTING FAST, and QUIET START your 6.5 engine will crank over and start when its cold out with synthetic, it will make you a believer and you will never subject your poor engine to pumping heavy thick DINO again.

Not to mention a tad more turbo whistle, meaning the synthetic oil is doing a better job lubricating the turbo, all while maintaining better thermal breakdown properties, and SUPERIOUR cold flow.

I'm not pushing it on anyone, just saying it IS a night and day difference in cranking speed, and quieter diesel clatter.

Matt, what do you use, where do you buy it? My problem is how terribly expensive it is. Even at Autozone/Advance, it's still going to cost me $60 plus to do the oil change, and with Delo, it's only around $25. Given that I change it out every 2500-3000 miles, it's pretty spendy.

What you need to consider is the ability to extend drain intervals with many synthetic lubricants.

If you are going to change oil at 3k miles, using synthetic is a complete waste of money IMHO.

If you choose to use oil analysis and extend drain intervals based on lab results, synthetics make a lot of sense, even more so if a bypass filtration unit is installed.

There are many benefits to synthetic lubricants as a whole, many of which have been mentioned already in this thread.

The drawback is the cost. This cost can be in many cases completely absorbed in the overall reduction of the number of oil changes while providing reduced operating temperatures and superior protection.

Advance has a sale going on where you get 5 quarts and Mobil 1 oil filter for 29.99. I bought 2 kits, for 60bux so I have 2 quarts of like oil for inbetween time if need, and an extra filter for next change.

Hell, I change the oil twice a yearish, roughly 5k, (120k, 125k, 130k) etc. A few extra pennies for the fast quiet startups is well worth it.

I have tried to pour the dino oil that sits in my utilty body during mid winter, and it doesn't pour. And when it does, half the oil is still in the bottle... doesn't come out, sticky goo.

Why on earth, would you want your pan filled with that un-flowable fluid on a cold startup???

The crank speed and quietness is so easlily noticed, its a true no-brainer for anyone in cold climates. And a tad more turbo whistle on idle snaps... no lie.

I agree. My fiendish plan (in the back of my head) is to put in a bypass filtration system, and to sign up for oil analysis, and change the filter on a regular basis. It just seems I never get around to it (cash flow is an issue as well), so my default is to buy Delo at Costco, and change every 3K, usually with a Mobil 1 or K&N oil filter (I like the K&N oil filters - I'm not sold on the K&N air filters, though). It's been working fine... I am sold on synthetics, as the mini-van has had synthetic in it since new, and is now on 180K, and still runs like new. No joke.

-Rob :)

I'm getting 20-25K miles with my bypass system & synthetic oil, samples still good at 25K I could maybe go more until a sample says I HAVE to change it, I may do that with the current oil in it now that has about 3000 miles on it, just to see how long I can make it last.
