Memorable PMD Moments (tell yours!)

Even in Baja after climbing the "Devils Backbone" loaded with ambient over 110 F, its only just warm to the touch. That's cool.

Gotta get a spare to have just in case. Anybody know a guaranteed used source?

haha we have a "devil's backbone" in our town as well!

and X2 on a good used source for PMD's??

As for my PMD story.....I thought this was unique. Never had any stalling issues, or the usual symptoms of a PMD failure. Then one morning, i started the truck, backed out of my spot, and bam. It dies. No restart. Talked to Bill Heath after id done all the diagnostics I could think of. The both of us were almost 100% sure it was the pump, but Bill said he didnt want to sell me one untill he was sure it wasnt the PMD. Well slapped the remote mount on the skid plate, and she started right up! Never can be too sure. There is always exceptions to the rules!

Hot summer Sunday in 2007, flying up Cross County Parkway Westbound in Yonkers, the Beast starts surging and blowing BLACK smoke, traffic behind us (had all three kids in back seat) back off really quickly as I activated the hazard lamps, screamed to a stop at the exit's stop sign, Yonkers PD cruiser sees my flashers/hears the diesel surging and waves to have me go ahead in front of him so I turn right and a quick left into a gas station. Knowing I only had one chance to park it, I drove it straight towards the garage doors of the repair shop, again screamed to a stop as the engine surged one last time and died. Popped the hood, saw black smoke coming from the aluminum heatsink mounted FSD on the intake manifold and noticed the black outer casing was bubbling (I was surprised it wasn't burning because of all the black smoke it was producing).

Waited two hours for the engine to cool down a little (still HOT). Disconnected the cable from the FSD, used a longnosed pair of pliers and a long thin flathead screwdriver to insert the connector into the OEM PMD. Ignition ON, no lamps lit on dash (uh oh), went ahead and cranked 10 seconds...no start... repeated three more times (5 minute cool down in between cranks)...each no start.

GEICO emergency road service had a flatbead pick up and drop off the Beast at a mechanic friend's shop half mile from home. We ended up replacing the ECM. Removed IP (150,000 miles on it). Got a good deal on a rebuilt IP with used PMD (removed that and kept as a spare), another good deal on two (2) used/warranteed FSDs both of which I mounted on the aluminum heatsink and installed behind/under front bumper. Tested both heatsink mounted FSDs successfully.

Ran it that way for a year before the driver side head gasket sprung a leak while driving West on, yes, the same parkway (just over a mile and a half from the previous year's place of occurence).

Quite an experience, I would have to say...

Regards,
Franko

Mine never left me stranded so no stories to tell. I bought it with 60k on the clock dealer replaced IP 3x before 120k with the last time at 115k. Bought a remote pmd kit and I'm still on the same pmd. It has hiccuped a couple of times since but never stalled. I do have a spare in the jockey box.

Leaving the hospital after my 3rd throat surgery IIRC, just past the parking toll booth. Angelic Loving wife had brought me a cold beer on ice (still unopened, waiting for the freeway).
We were two cars before a traffic light for the stall; As fast as I could move...not very, I climbed out ,as she popped the hood handle and turned on the flashers.
As I poured that beautiful beer on the original mounted PMD, I almost cried. It was a 85 degree (HOT for san Diego) day. As I climbed back in, she fired it up and we went straight home, without a sneeze.

Ordered a dipaco online, and a cable from Tim. Made a sink from 3/8 or 1/4" aluminum plate; some heatsink compound and bolted it under the front bumper. No more PMD, now a FSD.

That is fortunate that you had a cold beer in hand. Nice wife!

It was about -30 celcius one day and we were fishing about 200km away from home. driving up a hill on the way home the truck just died. I made it up the hill and didnt have a spare PMD with me. It eneded up having to tow it home and found out the lift pump quit killing the PMD.
