May have hurt my new motor

A new oil cooler and lines at the time of a new engine install might have helped. :D

How about a oil level sender that you would find on a small engine, like my lawnmower and woodsplitter have. One of those shouldn't be too hard to find or expensive.
 
Not yet. Just found got the results after work. About an hour or two of mechanical work (install replacement cooler, hook up lines, change oil filter, fill with oil, replace grill) Had to wrap up a water pump install on one of the tractors tonight.
