Max towing- M1028 6.2?

How much will this tow - it is real flat around here. I have a 85 military K30, 6.2 T400, 4.56 gears 14 bolt FF detroit locker rear and trac lock front. 9400 lb gross wt with the overload springs in the rear. Truck only has 13K miles on it.

It wont be for highway use and I know I have to go slow with the 4.56s, I have a 20 ft plus 5 ft dovetail deckover gooseneck trailer with 2 dually 10K axles. I need it for dragging construction materials to my property locally and maybe a backhoe if I rent one.
Should I try to pull that trailer with the 6.2?

I was going to wait on towing until I rebuilt the 6.5 turbo motor in my 92 dually but had been thinking about defferring that project and just start my shop contruction using the old 6.2 truck. ?? What ya guys and girl ( Missy) think? :D
 
OK thats what I was thinking, it ought to pull with 4.56 gears. I did the calculation and its gonna be 2800 rpm at 55 mph. I actually have 2 good complete 1992 turbo setups but not sure if im going to dive into that right now but if I do I will fab a new ex header for the right side as I hate the ridiculous design of that 6.5 rt turbo ex manifold .

Mostly I just want to get the 85 on the road so I can get to work on my shop construction. I have to send off for a bonded title as its a military truck and never titled or plated.

Working on a gooseneck hitch for it this week. I need the truck and gooseneck trailer just around here for now and its funny because there is literally only one small hill between my property and anywhere im going around here, the rest is flat as a board.

4.56 gears are great for getting a heavy load moving, but they really are the wrong gears for a 6.2 that spends any time on the pavement. 2800 rpms is out of the usable power range for a 6.2. I have turboed some one ton 6.2's with turbo 400's and 4.56 gears and as soon as the turbo was on, I re-geared to 3.73. When I ran my turboed pick up with 4.10's, I also ran 35 inch tires to get the final ratio close to 3.73. I towed up to 24,000 gvw with this set up and it did very well.

As for your stock 6.5 rt side exhaust manifold, it will work fine as long as you don't have a/c. That is the manifold I used until I built a suburban and wanted a/c and then I went with a banks manifold and my own turbo. I never ran the stock gm 6.5 turbo as I was running a non wastegated turbo made by Rayjay. I simply redrilled the base of turbo to make it mate to the stock gm manifold.
 
I got steel yesterday for the gooseneck hitch, and a monster 30K rated ball with a 2 inch diameter shank bolt that I paid $50 for at husky trailers. :rolleyes5: Will be thurs the 12th before I can work on it again though. I will post pics when I have visual progress.
 
Well Im contemplating going and dragging home this old M54 6x6 chassis , going to pull the engine and leave it for the scrap guy there- its a continental 602 cu in gasser boat anchor and prob weighs 3000 lbs.

Oh and thats not a deuce and a half, its a 5 ton.

I think at that point it will weigh about 10 - 12K :D My 20+5 ft gooseneck weighs about 7K. 17-19K total , 600 miles from home :rolleyes5:

Or maybe I will hire out the delivery

M1009 is a blazer. 1008 is the K30 truck, 1028 is a heavier duty truck with overload leafs in back and a limited slip in the dana 60 front. A few of the 1028 were duallys.
 
I thought a 1028 was a regular soft shell Hummer. A 1026 was the same thing, but with a winch. Of course, I've been out for a few years now.

I've never seen nor heard of a gasser in a 5 ton.
 
I guess Ihad them backwards. I thought the 1009 was the PU and the 1008 was the Blazer. I don't have mine in my possesion yet to figure out which it is.
