Can anyone provide a good solid writeup on deleting and bypassing the glow plug controller card? Specifically an '86 M1008 CUCV. Would like manual control over the glow duration.

Found these:

Sorry this isn't a great writeup, and it's only seemed to work for the past six years or so (since now I've to go troubleshoot my own system for not glowing apparently), but here's what I did on an 85 k10 6.2:
1. Bought a solenoid/relay (I think for a Ford starter which is separate) and attached it to the firewall above the glow plug relay (for ground where a contact to the hood is bolted).
2. Ran a wire from each side of the two main screw terminals (which are toward the front on the glow plug relay) to the terminals of the solenoid/relay.
3. Ran a wire from the solenoid/relay's controlling terminal to a lighted switch under the dashboard that goes to a positive lead from the lighter.

I don't recall if this is safe (lighter fused, but on when key is off! overnight glowing hazard!) or correct (two big screws on the glow plug relay?), but it's been working for several years in conjunction with the glow plug relay. It doesn't eliminate the relay, although I suppose you could do that if you shorted the inhibitor sensor plugged in on the passenger side of the top of the engine.

the override setup is quite and easy task. I did it a few years ago. you only need 4 wires total. one power to supply to solenoid(you can use the factory one from the alt) to one of the large terminals, the other large terminal get used for the wires going to the glow plug itself. you need a 12V supply to a momentary switch and one from the switch to smaller terminal on the solenoid. if there is a second small terminal it's for ground the solenoid. mine had 2 small ones but it's from a plow setup.

EDIT: one more thing I forgot to add. you need to connect the dash light wire to the large terminal on the glows side. mine was orange.

CUCV's have a different setup for the controller AFAIK. There is a "Card". The override should be the same though. What's wrong with yours ? If you want to trouble shoot it head over to Steelsoldiers....

I dont understand Just A Numbers way of overriding the glows. Is he not using the glow plug controller in his setup???? I also dont understand the dash lite wire statement. I need to do this because when the truck is warm the glows dont come on. This is not a problem if it hasnt been sitting real long but if it has been sitting and is warm enough to not glow but needs to glow I have to crank it several times. Thanks.

Bill, Just a Number is referring to setting it up using a relay such as a Ford starter relay. 12v power goes to one of the large terminals, the other large terminal goes to the glow plug wire side of the factory glow plug relay. This way when the momentary switch is pushed, power goes to the GP's. On my 95 I don't need a separate wire to the gp dash light but maybe on the older trucks you do?

Thanks Leo but then he does not run it like on the other mods in the library? This way seems easier to me. Wire from battery to ford relay then wire from relay to glow plug side of glow plug controller, then wire from small post on ford relay to momentary button, then wire on other terminal of switch to a fuse? Sorry I have a hard time visualizing electric schematics. The wire to the dash lite must mean so u can see that u r glowing as u push the button. I dont need to see the lite to know I have pushed the button do I? Did u do yours this way Leo or like the mods in the library? I dont want to fry my glow plug set up and have to buy a bunch of stuff.

That's how I did it and my gp light comes on when I activate it. I got my 12v power off the gp controller.

Ok I can do this I think. I am gonna go to the junkyard and get a starter relay and try it. If I count one thousand one and only do 5 seconds I should be safe without knowing what kind of GPs I have shouldnt I? Thanks Leo.

What do u think I should go in seconds? I found a starter solenoid off a Sears lawnmower with two big terminals and one little terminal and all the wires to connect it with rings already on the wires. Do u think its heavy enough, it was a big riding lawnmower?

Without knowing what's in there it's hard to say, Bosch Duraterm's and AC Delco 60 g's self regulate and can be run as long as you want(theoretically)

Without knowing I would keep it under 10 seconds.

As to the relay I seem to remember reading you need one capable of 60 amps or more.

Better go with the trip to the junkyard and a ford then cause my luck I would burn the truck down! Thanks NVW. I will put a pic on here when I get her done.
