Loud tick

Hello,

I have a 1995 chevy 2500 with the 6.5. I drove the truck yesterday to trow out some trash. It ran good going to the dumpster, but on the way back it started making a loud ticking noise. Way more than normal. I do not know much about the history of this truck, and it is my first diesel. Is this sound normal? I've posted a video of the sound. Thanks

Welcome
I can’t tell the sound good enough on my phone to id it well. Wait until some others respond that hopefully have better speakers. But 6.5 tick is only a few possibilities:

Do you know how to crack injector line nuts one at a time as if you are bleeding air out?
Do that one at a time and when you find the one the sound goes away on- that is the cylinder.
Check first for exhaust leak. could be an injector- swap the suspected bad injector with a good one near it. If the sound follows the injector- that is it.
After that I think you might need to remove valve cover and check the rocker arm button.

wait to

It's there, but, video not long enough to tell.

PMD mounted under the hood "in the oven" ain't good, but, unrelated.

Please tell me it's got an air filter of some kind!

How many miles? How many miles on injectors?

Is the noise louder under the truck by the transmission? A cracked flexplate comes to mind.

Remove fan belt and spin each pulley by hand.

Check harmonic damper and belt damper rubber condition. There are two rubber parts on the front of the crank that can fail.

These are dirty engines so an exhaust leak should show up as a soot stain. The crossover banging something at the dump and now has a hole is plausible.

Do a long video. Have phone in one spot like 10 seconds over left valve cover, above oil fill, then right vale cover, then center rear of engine. Take time to walk around truck doing it safely, don't reach over fan.
Then hold it under each place of engine like above. If hard to get yourself under the truck, put a towel or old bed sheet on ground, set phone on it and drag it under from other side, stopping along the way to record.

Thanks for your response. I will be uploading a video when I get back home thats longer and shows views from multiple angles. It does have an air filter it's a cold air intake. I will be changing back to the factory when I get the chance. The truck has 253,000 miles on it. The truck was given to me a month ago. It came with another motor off a truck with 147,000 miles. I swapped the motor out as the original had a bad deep knocking sound. It sounded great till now. Not sure how many miles are on the injectors. I used the ones that came with the other engine. I didn't notice any cracks on the flex plate prior to install.

Check engine oil. What viscosity of oil is in the engine? Is the drive belt in good condition, free and clear of everything. Sometimes a belt can become fraid and slap as it goes round. That would be another test, slip the belt off and run it for a moment to eliminate the accessories. Overall, I'm leaning towards exhaust leak.

Posted a longer video. It sounds like it's coming from the valve covers and under the truck. It is much louder than the video. Almost need earplugs to get near it with the hood open.

Sounds like it's at camshaft speed. (Yeah it's there and a sharp clack.) Again inspect the balancer and damper on the front of the engine. Belt off and spin everything.

Yeah sounds like injector knock or valvetrain like rocker loose. If you don't find anything with the valve covers off have the injectors tested. No, tested, as you want to make sure you found the problem rather than toss new parts at it and hope.

I'm sorry for the late response as a haven't felt good enough to take on this project till now. I took off the valve cover and all of the rocker arms but 2 where loose like in this video. Is this the possible noise I'm hearing?

So all those nylon buttons are in place? Loose means it's on the compression stroke. The rockers are free to float on the rocker tube only held by the nylon buttons.

The damper rubbers on the front of the crank look ok? All fan belt items spin without drama or noise? I assume you checked these first...

Yes the rubber looks good, no cracks. The fan spins with no noise. I spun the pully and accessories and found nothing. When I wiggle the loose rocker arms they are moving side to side not up and down. I'll be taking off the torque converter cover next to look at the flex plate.
