Loonngggg trip for a 6.5 to haul a trailer - advice?

Thanks David, that's good info.

I don't know IF I'm even going yet, they have yet to make a firm decision.

I'm just planning in case I do have to go.

I'm now thinking about buying a 2000+ (?) water pump (the highest flow one, the part number is around here somewhere) to replace my 98's pump and the fan clutch that goes with it.

I'd love to do a DMax coinversion or slip in a P400 before I go, but I just don't have the cash for that right now.

My 300,000 km 599 block will have to shoulder the load. That's where my main concerns lay....

You have the 9 blade fan, HO pump, and dual stats in the 98 already. The screw on fan clutch pump will balance the flow from bank to bank better but same GPM flow rate. However, even in AZ heat and 10% grades a clean stack, low temp 185 t-stat, and the Kennedy low temp clutch kept me under 210 with the AC on. No, it's 110 out I am going to run the AC on a hill! Small hills would spike the temp more than a hard throttle application hill. The HO pump I use is Autozone and I asked for a 1998 model year 4 bolt. So I really don't know that the screw on clutch setup is that much better. Getting air moving over the radiator sooner rather than later seams to be more important with sudden load of hills towing. As far as staying under 210.

I would recommend replacing the fan clutch if it is over 5 years old. Also think about a "summer" t-stat 185 just for the pull. You may need the heater more and stick with the factory temp...

:rof: Ok, I can't resist doing this temptation: (Just keep in mind I could hardly keep my Duramax cool with the 25" factory fan!)

A 2006 Duramax engine 15,000 original miles. Need to replace your blown engine? Will sacrifice this engine for $4800 call Leroy

Do you still have the stock tune on that 6.5?

More or less.........;)

Making more power isn't really a problem, I've got that more or less figured.

Still working out the best routine for TC lockup and release.

My problem is figuring out what needs to be done to make a good towing program without castrating the power it already has.....

i would talk to the efi live guys and there duramax tow tunes. yes it is a completely different engine but i bet they can give some ideas on timing and fuel tables along with tranny tuning

The Kennedy clutch is really good for the big mountain passes out west. It's flat, then boom, a wall. I want that baby engaged sooner than later.

x2. Make sure that fan is engaging before 205 IMO. That way by 210 its on, always. Once its on it cools things down in a few seconds. Go with wireless internet for sure! TTS in the pocket.

Watch your egt and temp and you will be fine. Remove your grill and clean out your radiator before leaving...I-90 route is good till South Dakota that I know of.
Went there last year with my brother..I had my Dodge and 1130 Lance...he was driving a 1981 Blue bird wanderlodge 3208 CAT NO TURBO...really slow up the hills and lots of smoke but no problems. I live in BC as well and have seen many a 6.5 dead on the hills of the Coquihalla and the Salmo Creston in 90 degree weather (probably with the AC on).

Well, the wife asked "what if we put a new engine in and how much would it cost?" last night:

Instantly, I'm thinking P400 for ease of swapping.

I'd love an LB7 swap, but it ain't gonna happen in time.

Honestly, I don't think we can afford it anyways but it's nice to think about.

I wonder how much "schoolcraft" charges for a splayed main 18:1 long block?

At the very least, I'm condering a devils own water injection kit (egt referenced) to up the MPG's a tiny bit and try to hold the egt's at bay.

The rad is freshly cleaned but I'll yank it before we go.

I still have to install an auber gauge for the trans temps.

I'm still condiering the newest 'balance flow" water pump and the new clutch to go with it. I've got the steel 9 blade fan already and prefer that over plastic....

Yup, that's why I'm headed south if I have to go.

Lower hills and cheaper diesel.....

I have a Devils Own meth kit on my Denali. Very nice kit and excellent customer service. Took my intake temps from 220F to 110F @ 8.5 psi.
