I live in NE Ohio so I know about rust and snow. We are the salt capital of the USA so things really rust around here.
As far as the RAM lasting vs a GM. I'd say it will last longer in our environment. Gm does a horrible job coating there frames from the factory. I've seen them rust out and break back by the fuel tank and up by the control arm mounts. Especially on truck used for plowing. Gm brake lines and ABS module location is a joke as well. Personally I won't ever buy a newer gm car or truck. Their quality has gone way down. I feel like I'm putting motors and transmission in GMs constantly at work. That why I bought my wife a newer honda. They are the best CAR manufacturer in the world in my opinion.
As far as front ends, the GM will ride better with the IFS. But, there are less moving parts in a solid axle. I do countless front end repairs on all the big 3. So really they're all the same in this department. The newer GMs eat ball joints just as bad as the Fords and Rams.
The 12v is a great engine, but he wants a newer truck so we should be talking about the 6.7 cummins. Which has proven itself to be the best common rail diesel engine on the market.
My vote is still for the RAM if you want a newer diesel truck.
Here is my view on all 3.
Ford- best chassis, worst engine, decent transmission
Gm- worst chassis, decent engine, best transmission
RAM- decent chassis, best engine, worst transmission.
Although the aftermarket has really help the 68 transmission in the RAM alot. So with some mods, they are lasting much longer
