89-93 12 valve Hp ? TQ ?

94-98 12 valve Hp ? TQ ?

98.5-02 24 valve Hp ? TQ ?

I'm going to be updating my 1953 Studebaker M-275 2.5T 6x6 truck tractor with a 5.9/7spd OD combo So i'm looking at Hp n Tq numbers to see what models of 5.9TD will work best for me.

160HP was pretty much standard from 89-93. 94-95 autos were 160, and manuals were 175. 96-98 autos were 180 and manuals were 215. 98.5-01 autos were 215 and manuals were 235. 02 brought about the HO 245 HP with the 6 speed manual.

:eek:160HP:eek:400TQ:eek: That would prolly be ok i'll be running a 7spd-OD trans with 6.72 gears and ten 11.00R20 tires.

I was hopping for about 275-325hp n 500-600tq and the ability to cruise 2,500Rpm from a stock 5.9L.

Mike

You could reliably build one for those numbers, or start with a common rail (03+) and have those numbers outta the box. Why not try to find the bigger CTD? I think they were a 6BT8.3.

On edit I think it might be a C series...so 6CT8.3, either way it's an 8.3L engine.

Nope the 8.3L will take more effort and cash than its worth, Trust me i tried very hard to make that engine work but trust me there just ain't the room for it, with that heavy engine i'll be losing my offroad abilitys as the front axle will do nothing but sink in seconds which its going to want to do anyway but trust me the 5.9L is the only good diesel option for me.

Mike

Ok, just checking. I wasn't sure for you. I thought maybe the slightly larger engine would be better for the application.

Yea i was planning on doing the 8.3l right from the get go but it seemed there was to many limitations for what i wanted in the finale product that the 8.3L just wouldn't work for.

Old plan:
300hp 8.3L 7spd-OD manual 6.72 gears 11.00R20 tires.

Issue #1:
the factory 275hp & 300hp 8.3's only reved to 2200 rpm max.
I could get the 250hp@2,400 rpm max unit the crank it up to 325hp but then i'm pushing 1000-1200TQ the 7spd-OD's Max is 660TQ.

Issue #2:
the 8.3L would only want to cruise about 2250rpm,so now your 66mph truck got slowed down to a 62mph@2250rpm truck.

Issue#3:
Tho the power would be great on the pavment the extra weight would Kill you off road in the Mud,sand and watery Mucky soft ground.

Issue#4:
The 8.3L can be had plenty around but they are much more expensive yo buy then the 5.9L.

So i found i could get the 250/500 275/550 300/600 Hp/Tq ratios much easier with a lot less weight using the 5.9L .

Now i was thinking i more than likely would have to deal with the 24V-5.9l which is electronic So would it be any more difficult to just go with a CR-5.9l or the newer 6.7L ?

both of which make the power i was looking for right out of the box so now mods need all parts are factory so parts n service should be simple and easy.

The beauty of the 5.9/6.7's is i can twist them up to 2,500 rpm needed to run 67-69mph. . .

Mike

for about $50 TOTAL. you can turn a 89-91 6bt into a 3200 RPM engine that makes about 275/600 and not a bit of electronics to deal with.

Knowing how to tweak the pump is the key. it amzed me what we did with a bucket o- bolts 91 i had. It went from 18 second quarter miles to LOW 15's with the turn of some screws and $50 spring & seal kit.

the 'newer' 94-98 engines have a P-pump and command a good dollar because of the P-pump.
crossy

Really ? so for about $50 bucks i got have a Fully mechanical unit making power in the wanted ranges ?

Mike

Absolutely- the early 89-91 NON intercooled trucks have bigger(more) fuel injectors and hop up cheap. With a SLIGHT & CHEAP upgrade in your turbo you can make another 50/100 on top of that number. I had a friend that JUST sold a 1990 Dodge Cummins airport tug with only around the equivalant of 20K miles on it and he let the whole drivable rig go for $2000.
The other DTR. diesel truck resource has a forum dedicated to the 'first gen' cummins diesels. There are 'stickys' there for the DIY guys. Crossy

Mike, it might interest you to read this article and others related to it. It is an 89 Dodge w/Cummins that they're turning up. they started with all of the really affordable upgrades and are slowly adding things like turbos and more expensive bits.

Very interesting Read

they got 339hp n 691tq for about 3,000 dollars.
Now as cool as that is i'm not going to invest that much cash into Upgrading this Motor.

The 7spd-OD trans only holds 660tq so would have voided the warrenty.
My whole reasoning behind this is to save some cash and make the truck cheaper to operate and easier to service.

I will prolly do all of the freebies possibly 1 of them Money costing things but thats about it.

Mike

yeah, we ( the DTR first gen'rs), followed that article and the guy who owns the truck is now a DTR member. On the PRE intercooled models (89-91.5) the upgrade injectors are not only worth about 25 HP instead of the claimed 60HP because they are rated for replacement of the 91.5-93 injectors.. There were also a few things done out of sequence,#1 is get gauges in place, especially with the weight you will be pulling around. His end result was satisfying. NOTE that fuel mileage increased also. Anyway if you go by what I said above you can get the numbers you want and have no electrical issues to deal with at all. crossy

Good durability ?
shouldn't be over worked running 2,500 R's down the high way in that heavy of a truck ?
should fluids n filter be changed early ?
whats is the recommended service life of the fluids n filters on the 5.9L ?
