Ok this truck came up for sale locally. It has just came from the local butcher, I mean mechanic, with a reman engine, tcase, and torque converter. Its a 95 K2500 looks like its been run hard but price isnt bad.

Power seats, 2 capt seats with solid center, power windows and locks, heat, ac, and radio work.

Bad: Mirrors are both broke, truck won't start by turning the key it takes jumping a couple wires, under hood looks like a splice job from hell.

Expect the front end is shot, questionable engine parts, gotta plan on exhaust turbo pmd kit and oil lines

Any pointers? Make heads or tails of the wiring and starter issue?

Yeah, RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!

Seriously a soldering iron and replace the corrosion prone scotch locks. The glow plug re-wire is a firetrap waiting to happen with no fusible links. Check that the heat shields are in place as the turbo is missing one. Electrical will waste a lot of your time and more so if it has intermittent issues. May be best to convert it to mechanical and a stand alone 4L80E controller or handshaker mod. The black box sitting loose on the intake manifold driver side is what again? Maybe the truck is a parts truck?

I want a 4l80 runner so I have a reason for having a built 4l80. For 1k I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a go at it. I have a rebuilt 6.5l IP and lines on hand but will need the pedal and wires Leroy's controller.

I looked into going 6 speed ally in my hummer so I would have a plan ahead of time when my 4l80e bites it. My decision is that it's not worth it. You loose a good chunk of power to run that monster. It soaks up more torque/ponies by a bit. Been too long for me to remember the numbers, but it was a chunk. You wouldn't just loose that power but mpg as well.

I always thought that 6 vs 4 gears would make up for a bit of that power loss, but then a friend here with a 7.4 swap his 4l80e to the 6l80e. It made very little difference, as in not even 1/4 second on 1/4 mile run. Yes that's after the played with retuning. Same tune was 1/10 second improvement. He did say it helped I towing A little, but has buyers remorse in the end.

I believe an Allison would outlast the 4 speed, but there's already too much fight to gain power from the 6.5. I've driven a few trucks with ATT, and a couple others with other nice turbos (that was a fun 6.5 truck Paul). I'm currently stuck on gm6 because of space :inpain: But I think your better to spend the same cash upgrading the 4 speed and just stay on top of oil changes to be ahead.

It would be nice to see someone do some good testing, then only swap the trans and do a direct comparison though. Might be able to change my mind. Of coarse then for me to use it I would want to go to the atlas 3 speed transfer case and...:greedy:

I hear there's this farmer guy wit a fleet of trucks somewhere north, and sometimes east of me that could do it with a tax write off...;)

If it runs I can fix things as I go.

As far as a trans, I've never killed a 4l80 yet. I'm fairly easy on my trucks but do expect them to work when asked.

Weak point is the Torque Converter Clutch so spend $1K on that, stall it for fun, and trans rebuilds only cost me $1200... I only blow more engines than transmissions.

Well I went and evaluated the truck

Poor ol girl... Someone started modding right: key on fused lift pump, battery bolts, 0 batt cables with sealed ends, engine runs good once running, pmd relocated (behind battery), but then things went down hill...

Missing at least one intake manifold bolt and fly wheel dust cover. Need washers? Seriously?!

But hey, for $500 I would buy it

He started at 2k, I said I wouldn't look at it for over 1k. He said come by he wants it gone, now I'm down 500. Both center intake bolts are missing.

Its pretty sad to see the way the engine was set up.

Know where I can find a 4l80 dust cover? He also mentioned the 4x4 actuator is out... Lol

I'm hoping its attached to my built trans! Lol

The guy that's selling it traded a 150cc 2 stroke dirt bike for it. He did the trade in the dark and the guy that had the truck had a shop full of show cars so he figured it was built with some care, not the hack job it is.
