My Powerstroke overheats just looking at the LLY because it feels bad for it...kinda like a sympathy overheat...but its only brief.....lmao just kidding...I had to get a jab in there somehow...lol

I only know of one LLY that goes more places than my powerstroke and good old johnny blew up the Kodiak...lol overheating getting towed my AZZ....i have pick of me pulling chevy's out...didn't you see the winches in the front and back!!! lol

When I had my '05 LLY, I never once had a problem with it overheating. Whether it be towing the camper during the summer (~6000k 24ft camper) or hauling or driving empty. I'll be the first to admit that I wasn't always the nicest to the engine while pulling, a/c on, doing about 75-80mph so we could get to camp asap. That truck never gave me a problem. Which is why to this day I am still piss'd that I sold it.

LOL YOUR RIGHT JOHNNY HAS BEEN EVERYWHERE TOWING.

Must just be a chick truck getting all hot at the sight of a mighty d-max.:chevy:

I have only had one time that came close to over heating, it set off the alarm but didn't actually overheat. I was in AZ, OAT was 110* and I was towing my 5ver up a sever grade and had cruise set at 60. I don't remember the grade % but at the bottom of the grade there is a permanent sign that says to turn off air conditioning to avoid over heating ( had to be 8% or better ). Alarm didn't go off until the top and every thing cooled down as soon as the grade changed back down.

A mighty d-max my azz!!!! The LMM I'll give you over the 6.4...but the LLY is GM's 6.0 Powerstroke and everyone knows it. It had more problems than the 6.5....lol:pound:

You really are funny, where do you come up with um. :ranger:

I hate to admit that i am a closet fan of the d-max...lol....But i'll only run an 06 or newer...but thats just me...and I get confused...is it the LBZ or the LB7?

i don't tow so no overheat for me. just for kicks if you have a truck that overheats, what is the usual cause? i am under the impression that a lot of truck overheating is due to sometimes towing too heavy of weight and also with extreme tuners so guys mash the peddle but what do i know? any opinion is welcome.

Thermal Feedback in closed loop boost control. The CAC overheats the radiator.

so this has to do with how the heat of the engine circulates with the radiator? what about the cooling fan that is supplied from the factory one would think that the fan would be sufficient. I am still relatively unclear about how you can overheat your engine when you first have a diesel which can tolerate heavy towing weight and i am sure the factory and engineers realized that with this diesel engine certain things would need to be compensated. I thought the maximum towing weight for a 2500hd, which is what i have, is 12000lbs not gross weight mind you, just plain weight. aerodynamics of a trailer you pull should have little to no impact on the engine, its the weight your pulling and environmental factors, ie heat outside and incline of road. also running a large tune and going 85 with a large load will make the engine work harder and a lot of guys do that and complain about engine problems. i am not trying to start a war but i am trying to rationalize this issue and understand it. I want to tow my toys with my truck and i know it can do the job but i also know its limits and when to stay in those limits. jmho though let me know what you guys think:D

Uuh... no. It's a combination of things. The person who has studied this the most, taken GM to court and won over the overheating issue is TxChristopher. He has authoritative information on the subject, though there are a few goofs out in the ether that challenge his assertions on the subject. However, his irrefutable methodical study of the problem stood the test of the courts, and he's even developed solutions for the overheating problem that once and for all solves the overheating issue. THE SOLUTION is the V2 Rad - a secondary radiator that tucks in behind the factory radiator. There are other things you can do to improve the problem, but the only documented 100% fix for the problem is the V2 Rad from Cool My Duramax - Welcome to the new site! (owned and operated by TxChristopher).

The definitive study of the LLY overheating problem (which does carry over to later year trucks) is over at The Diesel Spot. A little searching over there will provide hours and hours of informative reading, including video of the test runs, data, charts, etc.

The problem is a combination of factors - restrictive under-the-hood air intake (i.e. non-cold air), under sized radiator, restrictive exhaust system, a turbo that's too small (IIRC), and perhaps a few other specific things. TxC points 'em all out. Oh... and BTW, GM programmed the dash temp gauge to lie to you. So it's not as if they didn't know about the problem. They just tried to cover it up.

The engine fan sucks terrible amounts of HP when it engages and just doesn't cut the mustard - it will not sufficiently cool the engine once you start really overheating. And this overheating problem does not have to do with towing too much weight, or with tuners, or under abnormal conditions. The aerodynamics of the thing you are towing does have something to do with it. Suffice it to say that those of us who have truly studied the subject have come to the conclusion that EVERY STOCK LLY WILL OVERHEAT when given the opportunity and proper conditions.

Hope this helps.

thanks randy for clearing it up for me. i do see your point and everything you state does make sense. so what in your opinion should these trucks be able to tow? i believe the factory says 12000lbs and that is what i go off of for comparisons. i am happy txchristopher won his lawsuit he had been discussing it before on dp when i was there.

I think in reality you can tow much more than that... but I don't have any experience in this area. About the most I've personally towed is about 9k lbs. There are others out there that have towed much, much more... IIRC, in the range of 22k and more. Not sure if they're all here or not... most of the guys I've heard about towing heavy loads were out on DP.

Good luck!
