No overheating issues here. Of course I don't pull anything over hills & mountains to find out if I do or not.
 
It was suggested that the product "Water Wetter" from Redline could have been the problem as it doesnt mix well with dexcool
 
Even though I no longer have my 05', I thought I would throw in my 2 cents. When I bought it, it had 23,000 miles on a 4x4, ally, dual rear wheels set up. The truck was also a GM buy back because of overheating issues. All the dealer upgrades were done to it...new intake and programming.

My main issue was the flippin fan clutch was on almost all the time. Unloaded and slight grade it would kick on. Lightly loaded on flat, it would kick on...and of course...heavily loaded and grades it would always stay on. My temp gauge would NEVER budge. But the fan clutch would just be screaming.

Although I liked the truck, I think GM programmed the temp gauge to lie. Thats why I voted for " all the time."

BTW. I traded it in for other reasons and not because of that problem.

I understand why you want to get a different truck!

Mine kicks on in the mornings sometimes. But, its annoying the little time it is on..

A CAI that draws from outside the engine compartment has helped mine, I use the Volant with the Bumper scoop, I believe Banks has one as well.
 
I think all of the temp gauges lie. Mine reads about 20* higher than the actual temp. And so do both of our other LB7s and my cousins LLY.
 
the last few weeks I have noticed that the main time my fan would kick on was when the trans temp was approaching 200* in stop and go traffic. Today I installed a 10" electric fan from jegs and that seems to have stopped it, I barely got over 150* with the fan running...........I installed a relay and toggle switch also, so The fan is only run when needed. I'll get back here in a few weeks and let ya'll know if thats a viable fix.
 
My truck hasn't over heated at all. Of course I really haven't pulled much. Not sure if mileage has anything to do with it but th truck only has 18K miles on it.
 
Mine has not overheated at all. Have pulled up to 15k a few times on some long pulls. My factory gauge is never even close to the reading on my PMT which is hooked into the OBD port...
 
I haven't had any customers come in complaining about overheating. I personally haven't seen too many cooling system issues as of yet.
 
Yeah... mine has never overheated either, but I don't tow that heavy, and I don't typically tow in the mountains or in extreme conditions. I suspect that if I did, it would...

I don't have a lly, but I believe the issue is not in weight but in the aerodynamics of the load. From what I've read, it's with the "high profile" 5ers. I thought a lot about it this weekend coming back from Georgia. I have towed a 10,000lb skid steer/trailer combo many times with my truck and got around 12mpg locally, mix of highway and city/town roads and never overheated or heard the fan clutch kick in. Coming back from Georgia I was towing a car hauler with 4 truck beds and a cab on it. They loaded the truck beds to the front. The first one was one of the ones with a wooden floor, but didn't have the floor in it. The second was a regular bed with the cargo portion to the front. The beds were all standing on end and this basically made a huge air scoop. The total weight was probably 4500lbs or under but I was only getting between 8.5 and 10.7 miles to the gallon and it was all highway. And my fan clutch was kicking in quite a bit, a lot more at first though. That is, until I remembered to hit the tow haul button. Somebody mentioned their fan clutch kicking in when the tranny was approaching 200, I noticed the same thing. My point is I can def see how the load variances are the determining factor. I know I don't have a lly so why do I care? Well the reason I've paid attention to this is I won't always have my lb7 so I like to keep an eye out for these kind of things, so I know what I'm getting myself into in the future. With my truck, I got much better mileage and ran cooler with a load that weighed twice as much but was more aerodynamically friendly.
 
I have had the fan run quite a bit while pulling 5th whl(12k) but it is 12'11" high with a blunt front cap. Last Oct I was running from Franklin ,NC to Hiawassee,GA via US 64 and it did heat up real quick on a long pull at about 6% grade. Luckily I was able to pull off and let it cool,didn't do it again on that trip.Guess the circumstances were just right for it to occur,so given the right conditions I believe any of the LLY's can overheat. Also , I was not speeding or in any hurry at the time.

You have nailed the problem.

I have overheated my lly while carrying a 20' shipping container on my tri axle flatdeck. Great big flat face just wanting to catch air. Outside temp was 40 degrees with a head wind. This happened with the container loaded giving me a GCVW of 31,980# and on another trip same conditions with the container empty and GCVW of 20,750#. The fan would run for 20 seconds and then cut out. A minute later fan roaring again for 20 seconds. Never giving any engine cooling. Just cooling the fan clutch enough to stop it from operating.

I recieved a V2 w/fan from coolmydmax 2 weeks ago. Waiting for yard to dry up so I can get it installed.
