Wix 30 micron.
Lift pump bypass and fsu 002.jpg

Made a bracket from a peice of galvenized steel. Bent as to use a couple existing bolts. I use the mating plug for the power.

The GM fuel socks are held on tighter than the aftermarket. I used Vise grips with very light pressure to remove the sock. Aftermarket one are plastic and can be removed by hand.

Removed the line from the truck as I wanted to blow it out and it was so easy as both ends were not hooked up. Also, this is a picture of the Bypass fittings I sell on the web site.

Original LP removed you can see how the Bypass fittings are installed. They have 3/8" hose barb.

All installed except in the picture I have not ran the hoses, but you can see its a straight shot from the pump to the line with the bypass fitting going to engine/FM. The supply from tank is a very short section of hose that attaches to the inlet of filter.

Nice thing about this is its a "plug and play" deal. If you want to return to the stock LP it is very easy. Or if you are stranded somewhere its nice to be able to buy another stock LP to get back on the road. I keep the LP that came out of it in the tool box. (nothing wrong with it). I did the Bypass mainly to get rid of the PITA sock on the PU tube.

Leroy is that a sediment filter only or does it also separate water, somewhere if you haven't already incorporated it, I'd put in a vac switch to alert to a system blockage, or do you have a permanent install gauge I don't recall on your setup.

I believe this filter is just a fuel filter, no water sep that I know of. Any 1"x14 thread filter should work on this mount, so Im sure there out there just have to look if you wanted one.
My gauge has a Vac and pressure reading, thats actually what clued me into the sock being pluged up again:mad2: I hate those things.
I have one of my Fuel pressure taps (FPT) on the FM with a gauge. Another gauge just before IP. Allows me to monitor LP and FM filter condition. The gauge hooked to the FPT showed a vacuum so I knew it had to be a cloged line or dirty sock.

I get it where ever its cheapest ):h
Have the tank down now. Going to clean it out tomorrow. It does not really look all that funked up, but must be something in there. Easy to do now while tank is out.
FWIW I have run the same filter set up, but with a 10 micron on my wvo system. I get around 7k miles before I change it, have over 70k total miles on WVO. I would expect the diesel 30 micron to last quite awhile.

Any chance you got a slug of WVO into the diesel tank? That would trash a sock pretty quick :) s

Not on this truck, the WVO is on the 96. WVO really wont give to many problems as long as its been filtered properly. I used to add 50% WVO to diesel in the main tank during summer months. It ran/runs great like that. Did it on the 300d Mercedes I had to.

Ok - I just know what WVO does to our 50 micron filters at work sometimes (not so much the chunks, but slimes them over if its room temperature)

The 82 and 83 years pickups with the 6.2 had a spin-on fuel filter/water sep on the firewall. I don't know what the thread size/pitch is, but it has a water sep/dump on the bottom of it. It might fit the filter mount you used. I'm not sure of the micron rating, but I'm thinking it is a 10 micron which may be too small for what you want. I recently found one of these early filter mounte in a pic-n-pull and grabbed it so I could eventually do what you are now doing.

What pump are you using for the replacement? I need to find a replacement that has better pressure than my worn out stock pump. I'm only getting about 3 pounds at cold idle which drops to 1-2 at warm idle..

Don

This pump is the old Walbro 6500. The FRB replaced it. I think I remember the filter you refer to. Did it have a clear bowl? 10 micron would be to fine IMO for pre LP.

The filter looks just like an oil filter except for the water drain on the bottom, no clear bowl. I was wondering about the 10 micron being too fine. I wonder if it is possible to find a 30 micron replacement cannister with the water drain?

Don

Not really interested in offering one, to much time and more money than most would pay for. If you DIY you can even get the metal at Home Depot for around $6-8.

I do DIMyself, when I can, it takes me a long time....:rolleyes5:
is it bar stock? 2"?
Thanx again.

With the constant humidity in Houston, I bought fuel at one of the truckstops that did a good volume (a tanker a day of diesel) and never had filter or sock problems. I still do buy fuel that way.

Almost possitive they can be had with 30 mic and drain. I bet you could find a clear bowl also.
Hell, now that Im thinking about it I bet the raycor element would thread up to the base.

I'll have to take a look at mine, It is atleast 1.5" wide and 1/8" thick. Easy to bend in a bench vise

If getting a new LP, look at Cummins LPs. The Walbro is nice, but seems like it too is challenged by the pre-filter and high fuel demands of a high fuel flow PCM program. Matt found out that two Walbros works really well.

I think the Cummins pumps are 15psi and can be found new for about same price as Walbro. Flow on fail I believe.

I beg to differ with that conclusion Buddy, my Walbro is not challenged by a properly sized prefilter, Matt you took a ride did it feel like a challenged truck truck to you?

Depending on how the vanes in the pump stop the Cummins pump is not flow on fail, which is one of the things that kills their HP pumps.

One could use a Cummins lift but I would plumb in a bypass check valve the IP could pull a suction through, or run a GM pump in parallel with the Cummins so fuel could still be pulled thru it even if both pumps quit.

Guys at Hoesli Diesel and at Pensacola fuel recommended against relying on the Cummins lift pump which is why I went Walbro.
