Craigslist ad for a 6.5 truck. Naturally I'm curious if it might be the PMD, commonly misdiagnosed as needing an IP. Call him up to find out, guy says nope, somebody pulled the injector pump, never finished putting it back, now he's stuck with the truck and wants it gone. Good news is the truck appears to be pretty solid and clean looking, with only 125k. Bad news is somebody else took it apart, not sure how long it's been sitting, no idea how to install an IP. I actually might still have a rebuilt one in a box that I bought as a spare many years ago. Anyway, guy was apparently a used car dealer who went out of business and someone left this project with him, he can't afford to fix it. Being a used car dealer, he told me the truck is worth $6000. He wanted $3k, but it's been dropping fast, down to $2500 now. I told him I wasn't interested because it's a half ton, and I have no use for a half ton, but honestly, I keep thinking about it, wondering how tough it would be for me to get it running and on the road. Been wanting another 6.5 to play with.

2 or 4wd?
You will have to pull the water pump and see if they dropped an injection pump drive screw. Unless you can see all three of them somewhere.
Myself I would write off the entire engine if I can't see it run. Even then they are worth $1500 for 4x4 3/4 tons with rust free body. 1/2 ton brakes suck and I am not sure I would ever get another 1/2 ton even for a DD.

You can obtain missing parts from members here I am sure.

Injection pumps are a cakewalk otherwise. Likely needs an injector set at that mileage.

dropping....... how far will it drop until he bites? have you made an offer? i would go with your lowest offer and see if he will take it. what year is it? 95 has a year specific IP. it still could still just be the PMD. is the IP still there or did it get taken by the 'mechanic'? offer 1000.00 and it would be a good deal.

Just for clarification, 94 2500hd and 3500 models had the different IP

I love my 1/2 ton. No it might not have the stopping power of a 3/4 or 1 ton but it runs good and is a comfortable ride that gets good mileage. People ask alot of questions when they see it.

Yeah I love having a half run diesel to rip around in. My 1995 half run is way easyer to park at the mall then my duramax

I too would never own another halfass ton... I personally feel the suspension sucks, brakes suck, and mostly the transmissions don't hold up worth a crap either unless they had a 4l80e.

They do ride nice and tend to get a lil better mileage, but it's not worth it when you can set something up pretty darn stout and long maintenance intervals such as a 3/4 - 1 ton.

All 6.5 half tons with autos had 4l80e. The suspension is great for a half ton, never had a problem with the brakes. I believe the same caliper as the 3/4-1 ton, but smaller rotor right? There all alot of brake upgrades for a 5 lug if one felt the need to do it. The 1/2 ton is a very heavy duty truck for a 1/2 ton, same engine, trans, coolers, turbo....ect. Rear end is fine, but if it ever had a problem they are a dime a dozen. I have thought of putting a full floater in one and machining the flange for a 5 or 6 lug wheel.
They are easier to drive and almost sporty in comparison. The 1/2 ton will do 99% of the duty most would call for. Better MPGs
I do wish they were avalible in 4 door 6 lug simular to whats offered now (but no diesel).

To each their own. Trucks are tools to some, a DD to others and whatever to the rest. As for me and my truck, My half ton rocks. It has been a great study for one who didn't know dick about trucks in general and diesels period when I bought it four years ago. Now it is a hobby and a 'what can I try on it now' truck as well as daily driver. I like the idea of the full floater 5 lug Leroy just put forth. No, it isn't rated to tow a house but it probably could. Most importantly, it is capable of anything I've ever asked of it. When the time comes that I need a 2500 or 3500 then I'll get one and use this site to figure out the specific quirks they have over the half tons.

Curious as to what year the truck is....In my opinion if the rest of the truck is in nice shape it is worth that price all day long. Just be weary of the used car dealer "stories" Take a good look at the rest of the engine for any other odd ball fixes or cover ups. There is one for sale down the road from me for $3000 but the frame and body are rotted beyond belief. And it has 200K+ miles along with an assortment of other problems.

As for the 1500 vs 2500/3500, each vehicle has its strong and weak points. Personally, my 95 1500 diesel has been my favorite vehicle owned to date. In my opinion it had the best mix of power, fuel economy, towing capabilities, and ride quality. My 2500 is much better suited for towing and heavy weight capacity, but wear parts are alot more expensive as well.

well, the truck was a 98 4wd ex-cab. I dont know about the braking, I just know I couldn't pull my camper with it. Another thing Ithought of is S programing vs F. My mechanic friend who has worked on some 6.5s told me he though it was way too high also. Anyway, ads have all disappeared from Craigslist, so it must have sold to some sucker. I finally saw pictures in the newest ad, it was kind of ugly. Red, with what looked like flat black on the rockers and fender flares, front bumper painted black, and it had 3 inch stacks. Oh and flat black aftermarket wheels I didnt like.

2 years ago here in ct, there was a truck meeting that exact description for sale. I went and test drove it for a friend and it was far from nice. The black on the two tone was covering up some half assed rust repair on the rockers and door bottoms.

I wonder if it is the same truck.......????

Vin S tuning sucks dog nuts but it can be fixed. My 95 got the nickname Beast after it fell in a ditch and pushed water with the hood until I climbed a concrete culvered with it to get out :sifone:. When it hit the ditch I figured it would be ruined when it filled with water anyways so I would see if it could climb out, put 15K on it afterward before the crank pulley disolved. Perfect weight to power ratio for a DD/ oversized 4 wheeler AND i have towed 10K on a bumper pull with it.I miss driving the truck, I dont like getting dirt on my Dirtymax lol

Nick, it probably is the same truck. The non-factory looking two tone also made me suspect it was hiding body work. It's back on Boston Craigslist, apparently he got the injector pump in because he now wants $5000 and no mention of the IP.

He can keep it for that price. No big loss there...
