Jeep Liberty CRD trans acting up. Park to revers works. Drive to reverse does not

My wife reported that yesterday the 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD would not move if shifting from drive to reverse, But would back up if she went to park and then back to reverse.

Sometimes when you put it in reverse from drive, it will go in reverse. But the engine over revs before the Jeep moves.

Mostly the jeep just sits and doesn't move when you go from Drive to reverse. But it doesn't feel like it is in neutral or park.

It has worked every time when you go from Park to reverse.

I'd appreciate any input on the issue.
 
I have this issue with mine once in a while.

There was a recall for the filter / anti-drainback valve in the trans.

Look into it to see if that has been done on yours, and if not, I'm 99% sure that's the problem.
 
Here's what I found real quick:

The drain back problem is pretty easy to diagnose and fix or live with. When you first crank up, with your foot on the brake, engage the tranny in reverse, if you feel the tranny solidly engage just drive. If not with the engine running put the tranny in neutral for about 5-10 seconds then shift into drive and then reverse again at which point you should feel the transmission engage. If it does you have the drain back problem. This cycle works for me just fine as I'm too cheap to do a tranny service early to fix this minor problem (Note: I had a similar issue with 2 Plymouth Voyagers). However, when you first crank up if the tranny does not engage DO NOT rev the engine in gear as doing so willl 1) cause a very hard engagement and 2) let you drive about 100 yds before the engine shudders and stalls, it will restart ok, while throwing a code that takes several drive cycles to go away.

Obviously the long term fix is a tranny service and replacement of the defective or worn out filter/valve.
 
Mine seems to be the opposite. Mine shifts into reverse fine from Park. It's after it has been in drive that it does not want to go in reverse. If we shift back to park, before going to revers, everything works as it should.

I find it frustrating, not being able to smell. The fluid looks good but I can not tell if it smells good. From what I have heard the new fluid for these doesn't smell all that great to begin with.

I have a trans service kit from IDparts.com waiting to be installed. I was waiting to reach the proper mileage - which is about now. And to see if I needed to have any other parts rounded up before I dropped the pan.

I'm not of much help other than I know the early CRD's had alot of issues with the 545RFE not really being up to the task of the low RPM torque. They were well known to eat torque converters in short order.
