That's right, and it runs smooth with it out... though it's tripped the CEL on the dash. I actually care less about this than the CEL being on and hogging up its single notification method of something else needing to trigger it! Anyone experienced something similar?

For a 93 there should be 2 speed sensors hooked up to the trans. I'm surprised it would shift without one hooked up unless it's the input.

Yeah I'm not sure which sensor is unplugged if there are two. Nor have I messed with it either! I'd just hate for something to crop up and I wouldn't know about it because the CEL is already on.

Both input and output sensors are easy to change and less than $20 for AC Delco, less if your near a tranny parts shop. I had one throwing a code years ago, but when I stopped by a shop to pick one up I couldn't remember which it was, so I just swapped both. iirc it was like 15 minutes start to finish. No issues after that.

Use a paper clip and read the codes out.
Never seen a CEL on mine and I would be very curious to see what code actually turns on the light. I have roasted 2 transmissions, have has several wiring failures, maladjusted TPS, and other issues that don't turn on the 'Service Transmission Soon' light. There is nothing on the engine that the computer controls so the light would be very rare.

It's possible you have a short for the CEL to come on or bad ECM... :hihi:

Start with the grounds esp. the ground for the ECM by the trans dipstick bolt on the back of the engine.

There is a RPM sensor where the distributor would go on the back of the engine that is also a oil pump drive. Make sure it isn't cracked.

The 2 wire sensors on the transmission are known to have the insulation fail and short out. Inspect the wires all the way back 6" from the plug esp where it joins the main bundle.

The main transmission plug can get covered in ATF. Unplug and clean it out.
