Instant IP Failure?

Fuel filter and lift pump !!!

Make sure your filter is clean and that the lift pump is working.

Also the fuel shutoff solenoid on the top front of the IP can fail and this will give a NO start or run. Be sure the shutoff solenoid Clicks when the key is turned on.

Keep us posted

Unplugging OS is one thing I always recommend. However, why didnt you get a DTC17 or 18 before? Did you get those DTCs after unplugging the OS?

How long do you normally crank? plug the OS back in, unplug the crank sensor and try starting. See if you get DTC19 from that. Give it about 10 seconds of cranking.

The SES light should be on until it starts without codes.

Its peculiar that you didnt get the codes that anything has failed. The other possibiility is the presence of a large amount of air in the fuel lines.

I noticed you put that you dont use any additives, or maybe thats just that there is none in now, but be sure to add 1/2 to 1 quart oil with each full tank, non-detergent SAE30 or TCW3 2-stroke.

I'm not sure how many miles are on the IP. All the parts and extension harness are Heath parts. I have had the shut off solenoid off and tested that it works because I didn't just want to trust the click. We bought the rig with 120,000 miles and are now at 145,000. I don't have any history on the car before that time. I have a working lift pump and fuel pressure to the IP. There have been no codes thrown up to this point, but I haven't checked them since it fired when I unplugged the optical sensor. I have the intake off so I did not let it run. My question at this point is whether unplugging the optical sensor and getting the car to start is a sure sign of a IP in need of replacement or does the optical sensor just need to be replaced?

Thanks. and I'll update my signature.

Have you been running ULSD the last couple years without additives? If so Id replace the whole IP. Best to first run more tests and confirm the computer logic I wrote before.

I only use additive on occasion. Maybe every third tank of fuel. DieselKleen? I believe is the brand. Not sure off the top of my head. I will put my intake back on and try to fire it off this week and see if I can get any codes to kick.

The Power Service DieselKleen is not very effective as a lubrcitiy additive. If using it every time then maybe, but to go every third tank then IP wasnt getting lubrication it needs. Just use some oil in it every time.

X2

I run PS Grey with 1qt oil of bargan (dollar general where I get mine) SAE-30 non detergent oil in mine to 20 gal fuel, supposedly newer IPs with "hardened" components are okay with ULSD, oil is cheap enough and you get a slight bump in mpg with it.

Ok so I replaced the IP as I was informed that unplugging the Optic Sensor and getting it to start was a sure sign that it was going or gone. When I got it all hooked up and connected to my PMD it started up and over revved to the moon. It continued to do it until I let it sit for a couple hours. Then it would not start at all. So I plugged in the PMD that came with the new pump and she fired right up and ran perfect. So now I am pretty sure I replaced a pump unnecessarily. At this point I believe I have experienced instant PMD failure which would seem much more common than IP failure. So I don't know that I have anything new to offer for advice other than you should check absolutely everything before you blame the IP. I have had my PMD out of the engine compartment since new. Fortunately that part should be under warranty, but my time and dough for the IP exchange could have been saved. Always suspect that dang PMD. This will be my third in 30,000 miles. Anyway I just wanted to update on my outcome. As much as I enjoy the site I hate it when I get to the end of thread I had searched and read through only to come to a dead end.

I wouldnt say the IP or OS wasnt the issue so fast. If it started right up with the OS undone, then the PMD must still be functioning, or one huge coincidence. Try putting the old PMD back on now and see if it fires up, probably will.
