Instant IP Failure?

I just spent the day under the hood of our rig with no success and wanted to pose the problem to all of the helpful people on this forum so hopefully you can give me some better insight or just remind me to check one of the obvious things I have missed.

So my wife was driving along and thinking how nice it was to have the car running so well when it just stopped running. No evil noises or erratic running prior to shutting off. She coasted to the side of the highway and tried to restart it with no success. That is still the problem.

I will try to remember all the things I have checked out today. The car cranks over well with fully charged batteries. I pulled the codes and get 12 all day long. I have a factory repair manual and followed some tests of the PMD power and ground sources and they check out. Fuel pump is working. I even hot wired it just to make sure it was working when I was cranking and couldn't hear it. Checked fuel flow all the way to the IP. I pulled the oil filler off the front of the motor to make sure I didn't lose drive to the IP and all is still rotating there. I checked grounds all over the place and even the ground off the IP itself. I pulled fuel lines off the injectors and am getting no fuel. (obviously, but had to see it for myself) I pulled the fuel shut off solenoid plunger thingamajig off the top of the IP and put voltage to it to make sure it was actually functioning. I didn't trust just feeling it click.

Any other ideas would be much appreciated. I am sure there are some obvious things I am missing. Has anyone had instant IP failure? All the stories I have heard seem to be longer death. Maybe the shaft broke in the pump? Lay it on me. I will put as much into the diagnostic list as I can pull out.

Have you tried a spare PMD ?

This has happened to a buddy 2 months ago. He runs with a brand new D-Tech. The PMD was less than 1 month old when the truck quit working, shut off and never restart.

I disconnected the D-Tech, connect a used PMD and she fired right away.
Then, I reconnected the D-Tech. She fired right away too, and is still running fine ... I never knew what did happen....

Check the extension harness too it might has been damaged.

As far as I know, IP failing make your truck reving erraticely before quiting, I'd rather vote for a PMD issue, though it is coming from a very trustable seller.

Well I tried the old PMD that I had. It was working as far as starting. It was just doing the stall and won't restart while hot thing. So I guess I don't necessarily have a known good PMD to compare with. I tested the extension harness for continuity with an ohmeter as well. Thanks for the input. I definitely need to try a known good PMD as well. I had never heard of one just shutting down never to restart.

Sounds exactly like what happened when my extension harness failed. Try connecting the PMD directly at the pump to see if the harness is the issue.

X2 - I bought a brand new extension harness, from a reputable supplier,
and truck would not run - weird thing is, continuity checked good.

I took the extension out of the equation with no success. Thanks for everyone's advice. I will try to get my hands on a known good PMD. This one has never acted up or done any of the normal failing PMD things previously. So I still suspect the IP yet it hasn't shown any odd signs of failing either. I have searched the electrical high and low as I was sure a line got pinched, burned, or I lost a ground connection. Is there any way to see inside the pump to make sure it is turning internally? I was just thinking maybe a shaft has broken. I have never run anything but diesel, but I have heard of guys running veggie breaking there pump shafts so it could be possible I guess. Thanks again for the help.

If you take the top plate off where the fuel enters the IP, you maybe able to watch the encoder wheel turn inside the optic sensor while someone is trying to start it.

Did you check all fuses underhood and in cab? Specifically the ECM fuse?

Also, all grounds. There are a few strap grounds passengersde intake bolt to frame that caused mine to stall a few times. Known ground to break due to poor routing next to hot exhaust.

Never heard of instant IP failure. Usually codes, runs like poop. Etc... Relax a little before worrying about IP.

You have all lights when you turn the key to wait to start? Name them please.

I have gone through all of the fuses and checked the ground strap you are referring to. When I turn the key on I get the glow plug light, ABS light, Coolant light, Service throttle, and water in fuel. They all go off. The Battery light, service engine soon, check gages, and the brake light come on and stay on. thanks for taking the time to help out.

If the SES light keeping on, that means a code just show up. May want to check it again.

When all lights on like that, I would clean all the grounds first.
Check the battery one at a time not both at tandem.
Also check all the battery cables.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the SES light stays on until the car has started. Unfortunately mine won't. I have pulled the codes a couple times in hopes of something different, but only get the 12. Which normally would make me real happy. I wish it would kick me something for a little direction. I will definitely keep at the grounds and connections. I feel like I have checked, wiggled, and traced every wire in the thing twice already. Yet I'm sure I'll miss the important one. thanks

That's exactly how my first PMD failed.

x2. you said your old pmd got the thing started, right? so if you put the old PMD on there that means that you got fuel to the lines where before you had none. it was just replicating the same symptoms that caused you to replace it.

that means your second PMD has now failed...congratulations, it's not your IP!

Not to be ground redundant, but these 'fly by wire' systems are 100% dependant on them. You must take them off, wire brush, and re-install them all.

You have fuel coming out the t-valve or fuel filter bleeder when cranking?

There is also an Injection pump harness that the PMD harness connects to, This connects to the IP with 2 screws from the back. May want to take a look at the condition of that, as well as continuity of all wires there too. Unfortunately this requires removing the intake, which will require a new gasket, but no coolant jacket breeched, so no mess. I would do this after you are 100% sure you removed, wirebrushed, and reinstalled every ground.

There Is also a ground under the dashboard. Look there too.

Can't hurt to pop the glovebox and remove and re-install the wire harness's to the computer. To remove the computer pull it towards you firmly, its held in by metal clips. It will give you more room to work.

In my search for a PMD to try out I contacted the people at heath diesel since they are not too far from me. He suggested unplugging the optical sensor from atop the injection pump and trying to start it. It fired right up. So good feelings except I am told that means my pump is shot. Sound right? Thanks for all the input up to this point. I guess I feel good that I am on to something I just don't like the $$ of replacing the pump.

Damn, sorry to hear that... I guess you can un-relax now :(

On the side note, its not that much money or work. A recent write up here was just done. Should be good for another 150k with a new pump, keep your fuel well lubed (additive) as always.

Optic is field replaceable, how many miles on current IP, and all these parts you putting into the truck, extensions-drivers, were they from ebay (EDAM) ??? if so possibly your problem is there many folks have had issue with that vendor.

need to go to user CP and update your signature,
