I need to replace the ps pump that many think is the cause of my problems which I agree but was wondering with all the evo problems that I hear(I personally havent had any to date ,except this one but dont think it was evo related)can I use a 1996 pump and just change the pressure line from the pump to the hydroboost to a 1996 to make it work or do I have to do something else for it to work/feel right,or should I just stick with the '97 pump with evo? Please any suggestions would be appreciated....thanks,Anthony

IIRC there's a box under the dash that talks to the EVO same box does the pass lock ( I think that's what its called) don't know if that would cause any issues tho....

When you unplug the steering wheel sensor the effort should be easy all the time and feels a little loose due to the easiness but it feels controllable just doesn't give that little resistance feel you are use to that makes it seem firm/tight/sporty feeling.

You can also try and read the across the pins of the sensor and the resistance should be fairly smooth variance up to something like 15K ohms. If as you turn the steering wheel and the resistance varies erratically and reads any opens then the sensor is bad.

A bad sensor makes the truck have a funny jerky slipping type steering feel (especially in a curve). Its worse when driving one handed because the effort to turn the wheel varies erratically and just arm weight will tend to make most people quickly move the steering wheel just slightly as effort required suddenly drops. If you drive 2 handed at 10 and 2 its not as bad but still feels funny and a bit jittery.

That should diagnose the sensor. But if you don't get the consistently easy steering when you unplug it something else is going on maybe bad EVO valve control on the pump or bad pump.

I am replacing the pump due to no steering or brakes and we think the shaft sheered inside the pump which made the hydro and steering box have no pressure.I am just asking if I want to do away with an evo pump altogether couldnt I use a '96 pump and hose and fore go the whole by pass procedure on a '97 pump?To me that sound a lot easier and chaeper way to go than buying the '97 pump,by pass kit,and new actuator when in theory I could use a '96 pump and hose.Correct me if Im wrong or Im missing a needed part or something.I am removing the bad pump tomorrow then have to decide wether to install a '97 evo pump, '96 pump and hose or '97 pump and by pass the evo with the gm kit.I also seen a Cardone pump for a '97 that has a by pass with it but doesnt say if the actuator is installed in it: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...9-p?navigationPath=L1*14921|L2*15009|L3*15715

Hey ak...you were telling me that you had a pump's shaft sheer off inside the pump and I asked if it walked out the front of the pump, well I was just out side and for shits & giggles I lightly pulled on the pulley with a pry bar and guess what, the pulley and shaft came out the front of the pump and the only thing stopping it from falling completely out is the fan shroud! So I guess I got my answer as to what was the cause of no steering and brakes! I had a feeling it was the pump as so were many of you but would never thought that the shaft would break like that and stay in the pump with the engine spinning the pump. I feel a lot better now knowing its def not the booster cause I can barely afford to fix the pump let alone three bills for a booster.

Now I still got to figure out what pump to put back in it!
