idles way up,then back down....then WAY back up,then back down...etc etc HELP PLEASE

Yes !! i love my diesel....i don't even drive my 2001 Monte Carlo SS anymore sence i got my dually going. Now if i can just figure out my loss od power i'll be all set. money is very tight as wife got laid off so trying to scrap up money of boost gauge for the truck. i can tell you there vacuume at the wastegate. when i start heading up a hill it starts to smokes alot. i have had a 95 chevy just before this dually. i heard a whistle when i stepped on it...i do not with this. the 95 had a cold air intake and my dually is stock, was sure if the cold air intake was the reason i can hear the whisltling. I'm soakin up all the info i can....BRING IT ON !!! LOL

Thanks for ALL OR ANY info
Jeff

Surging up and down for no good reason = bad accelerator pedal sensor (because it's all electronic in there) or bad pmd

not trying to argue...but i replaced the injector pump AND PMD at the same time. fixed my problem. and also got a relocator for the pmd. i then installed the old PMD cause i wanted to know myself witch one it was. the old PMD worked just fine, so...i now have a space !! lol hope that helps ya.

Another Question.....

Ok. I don't think i am getting much or any boost. thing runs great till i start up a hill with weight behind me. Starts blowin out black smoke then drops a gear and goes to a grawl. i'm talking about maybe 5k . so...untill my gauge gets here and i install it, i've been playing with the turbo. i notice theres NO vacuum at the wastegate and the lever is down. i raced the motor up a few times and the lever went up and stayed there. at idle ......it was still there till i pulled the vacuum line off, then the lever went back down. Is this normal ? when the wastegate is closed? (up or down).......where should the lever be ? if this is NOT right...whats the problem ?

I liked the vacuum system with the stock turbo, works well when it works, and unfortunately rebuilt vac pumps are turning out to be problems, that wont go 150,000 miles like the originals. You should have 15" of vacuum at idle which is a noticeable amount. The lever should be pulled tight up at idle, and you should not be able to easily move it by hand. If its down and moves freely then check vacuum. With no vacuum go check at the solenoid to see if its getting any from the pump. If no vacuum there go back to the pump and see if any vacuum there. Could be a bad solenoid or broken line, unless you go back all the way to the pump and have nothing. Solenoid it a common failure, the one on the drivers side valve cover. Easy to see if there is vac there but not going through it.

Yeah this sounds like either the vac pump is not making vacuum, or the waste gate solenoid is faulty. The prefeprred (cetrainly most economical) way to deal with this is to buy or fashion your own Tubomaster. It is a purely mechanical device that gives the engine all the boost until a pre-set theshold (adjustable by spring tension).

It is on my to-do list, but my vacuum system hasn't quit yet...

You really think so? From what i heard about PMD's is... they will start and die, then it might start and run for awhile and die again.
Will PMD's do this too. it has never died on me yet. but just "Breathes" hard. I don't have alot of money to burn on chasin parts... but if you really think thats the problem...i will go get one ! Know any good places to get one...Cheaply of course. LOL

Thanks alot !!

Had this exact same issue and it was the PMD. Put a remote PMD system on and all will be good.

I no longer have the Dually. Traded it for a "Deal of a lifetime" i AM looking for another 4x4 4dr dually diesel to replace mine. i had to pull a trailer with a 3/4 ton dodge for the return trip. the trucked and turbo pulled great for most of trip. i did put a "Bar" (boost) gauge in dually when i was having boost problems. i never did figure it out thou.... every once in awhile i noticed loss of power and black smoke pourin out tailpipe, i also noticed no boost. crawled up the hill....it built up speed again and then i would noticed i had boost again. just seems like it would just come and go. I'm thinkin its either the electric switch or power goin to switch, i don't have truck anymore now but...i will have another one soon. i wicked miss my dually !!!

As far as my trucks breathing problem..... i asked everybody and was told.... 1/2 said PMD, other half said injector pump. Soo.....i repleced them both. i know some said NOT to buy from ebay but.... i live paycheck to paycheck. i checked the seller out good. had alot of good reply's AND had a warranty . It also came with both....pump AND PMD . think it was like $600. and i bought the relocator kit for pmd as well. i have drivin the truck all summer with no proplems either.
when all was fixed..i installed the old pmd and truck still ran fine so..........

I would hate to try to diagnose this sort of problem without my laptop and scanner software. I pull up the sensor view and monitor the pertinent sensors.

I was able to quickly diagnose an intermittent wastegate solenoid on my truck by watching IAT, boost, solenoid duty cycle while driving.

If you have vacuum and the vacuum motor is good, then consider solenoid.
