It all started with some bantering on another thread between those of us from the north and those from somewhat warmer climates.
Well since my recent work replacing the IP. Injectors, GPs, FTB mod and my Heath PCM, I had been pretty pleased with the starting in cold weather. It had been starting quickly in teens to twenties above zero (F) without being plugged in and sitting for weeks at a time. Then, last Thursday it was -9F and I wanted to get some fuel before the prices went up. I went to start it and it just wouldn’t quite go. So, I plugged it in for about 40 minutes and away it went. I went get fuel and made it to about 10ft short of the pump when it quit. I thought, Oh No I’m out of fuel. (My gauge doesn’t work very well as none of them do, so I usually rely on the miles driven) I couldn’t be out because I hadn’t driven enough, but I thought maybe I did leave it idle quite a while a few times to warm it up. I tried to start it again with no luck. I did have a can in my truck so I put 3 gallons in it to pour into my tank and try the usual out of fuel procedure that has worked in the past. Put fuel in, open the T valve and let the LP push most of the air out. Well, this didn’t seem to work as I could not hear the LP running. I tried to start it anyway and it fired up, but only enough to move 5ft.
I ended up calling AAA (I’ve been a member for 40 years and have gotten my money’s worth over the years). When the driver finally got there, I had him give me a push to the pump so I could at least fill up. It only took 15 gallons, telling me that I was not out of fuel. He then pushed me all the way home (2 blocks). I took my car to the auto parts store to get some Power Service 911 to put in the tank. I did that and plugged it in overnight so it would be warm plus I have a battery maintainer under the hood that comes on when I plug it in.
The next day it was +20F when I tried to start it. The first thing was that I could hear the LP clicking away while the GPs were cycling and it fired right up. I let it run for a few minutes and shut it off and unplugged it. The next day, I started it again without it being plugged in and it fired right up. Since then, I’ve put about 50 miles on it and it’s started every time and hasn’t skipped a beat.
Now my thoughts are that maybe there was some condensation in the fuel line near the LP allowing it to run until I got to the pumps for fuel, then completely clogging it up along with cold thick fuel? Originally I was thinking bad LP, LP fuse, LP relay, but when I started working, I was think the freeze up thing more.
Another thought I had was the PMD, but that wasn’t likely (but anything can fail anytime) because I had just replaced it about 50 miles earlier.
Any ideas?
