I ordered me up a shiny new ATT turbo. It is now mounted and seasoned as per instructions. I was a wee bit p' od that I didn't get it finished till after dark and raining here to boot. So I took it for a long anticipated drive to see what all the rave was all about.

OK this thing is loud, I can now hear the exhaust cruising along at 40 mph. My truck has an aftermarket exhaust and MUFFLER. The only time I ever heard the exhaust before was when I had a wall along side the passenger side or with the foot in it.

I guess they call that reverberation or echo. Unloaded with a gm-8 I hit 950 egt's and can do the same with the ATT. I also noted the ATT hit 14 lbs boost. The heath t/m on the gm-8 was set for 14lbs.

That said you'd expect the same pulling power. Say IT AIN'T SO. OK, IT AIN'T SO.

It is different, it pulls harder just by the seat of the pants dyno. Going from a 45 mph cruise to 75 mph with hard acceleration feels more firm or precise for lack of a better word. As for black smoke off the line. I couldn't tell just how much more there was due to darkness and rain but I swear I saw a thunder cloud.

I'll be towing the trailer (6500 lbs) next month so will have a better idea how it handles the famed Coquihalla highway which in terms of gradient goes from 200 meters above sea level to 1244eters above sea level in 40 kms.

The pic here gives a better idea http://www.th.gov.bc.ca/popular-topics/documents/Hwy%205%20Coquihalla%20Pass%20grade-profile.pdf For me this is the ultimate test in BC Canada.

Once the water meth sprays I hope to be at 50 mph at the top. If not I am running out of options to attain that speed. Might have to sell the house for a dmax. I'll post up some more observations when I know more. I hope to have my wife drive the truck so I can see & hear what it looks and sounds like from another motorists position, I'll follow her on my motorcycle. Ed

I've driven Paveltolz's rig with his ATT. It's nice. Pulls hard, strong and doesn't let up. i think you'll be happy with it once it settles in.

I've been seriously looking at using a Holset VGT on my rig. BUT ... before I do, we're gonna put the ATT on my rig (hand shaker) and see how it likes a manual transmission.

Yes, you can feel the difference. My heavier burb will leave my GMx pickup behind... And I am not done perfecting the burb yet.

How is the black smoke? I am looking at your exhaust setup to replace my 3" Banks as anything over 1/4 throttle smokes like a coal train. If I hammer it the smoke lets up after the turbo spools. I may have a couple other bugs to get out yet as well though.

Ed Great of you to share your att experiences . Looking forward to the camper towing results . Watching the tsunami horror unfold in Japan.Trusting you & yours are on the high ground .

congratulations! I would like to get me an ATT some day, but until then, is the GM8 for sale? :)

I advertised my GM8 on craigslist and sold it 3 weeks ago, also tried to see if there was any shaft play in it last night and it is tight and spins easily. The buyer was aware he couldn't take possession til the ATT was up n running and kept him advised as to the tracking number for the ATT. He is going from a gm4 to 8 now. I never really noticed it before but I had an exhaust leak. Always kinda wondered why it was louder over by the front wheel on the passenger side vs. the drivers front wheel. At idle I hear the exhaust flowing out the tail pipe much better now. If I get a chance I'll do another 0-70 mph run so you can compare with the run in my sig from when I had the hp4 puter upgrade done. Just need to copy and paste that one into your browser. Ed

yep we are on somewhat higher ground. elevation 90 ft above sea level. To give you an idea of where we are, it is 7 miles to the USA border and I can walk out to the back of the house and see the Pacific ocean. Hopefully Japan fares better than the tsunami that hit Sumatra.

Ed, you will find that in time it seems to pull even harder. Congrats.

I had higher egts under normal driving than what I thought I should see when I first installed mine. I almost yanked it back off because of that and lack of bottom end. It gets much better with some break in. If something supposedly better came along, I may try it but won't go back to a GMX, especially after towing my 29' 5er with fishing boat behind that.

OK I got hear what the reason might be that it will improve over time...?

Can't help myself, just the way I am. I deal with statistics numbers everyday & I just have to understand what is gonna change over time? The PCM maybe or what?

I guess it's like wine or aged Rye Whiskey. But if as ak diesel driver says the pcm learns, How does it do that ? The turbo break in I can understand. If the PCM learns should I keep my foot to the floor often or not.

I'm thinkin' BS... but I'm not CALLIN' BS about the PCM learn that is...
Not to say I don't learn something every day.

PCM learning isnt really a new thing gassers have been doing that for awhile now; IIRC its more of "optimum strategy" I.E. if you have a heavy foot it adjusts it self for power, but if have a light foot it will adjust for MPG's..

Thats not just because of the ATT, got to love the DS4! Actually neither is just because of the ATT, but even with a stock program and that exhaust it would smoke like a coal train, been there done that.

Somewhat BS, there may be some learning things on the OBD2 trucks, but WOT is still WOT. The learning is more like human learning knowing how to pedal or keep RPMs up to spool better, not that its a racer though. Some PCMs learn pedal sensitivity and shifting type stuff.

The turbo bearings are tight when first out of the box as the bearings get burnished in and the pcm does some adaptive learn (they do that and GM notes it in the manual) the truck will drive better. The exhaust is a crucial part of the package, any small 3 inch system will affect the pressure differential across the turbo. The freer flowing the exhaust, on the turbo exit, the faster the turbo will spool up. I recommend a straight through muffler if possible. I have had (Buddy was one, he can explain) two people that replaced their Banks exhaust and the truck ran much much better. ED If you are not happy pm me and let me know, but I am sure after towing you will see what your truck is really capable of.
