HX40II Turbo Install

I think mine is from a Dodge also. Just get a clean one they tend to get hazy over the years from heat/oils...ect.

If you go with a K47 you'll need the 3" Street elbow because of space conciderations. Until then you could drill a hole in your elbow and install a gromet and filter indicator gauge.
Leroy, did you have to build up the male end to fit the Amsoil filter?

Thanks Brother. You ever think about writing a book with all this great info in it. I'm almost sure it would be a best seller. And then you could retire.:rof:

I got the turbo bolted up but it keeps leaking from the turbo down pipe to the other down pipe, i have the v-band tight do i need a gasket here any help thanks

I would check to make sure both flanges are in the V-band. Some downpipes just flare the end of the pipe and dont fit right against a 3" V-band flange. I struggled with that connecting to a GM4 or the ATT.

I had issues with the same thing when I was dealing with my head gaskets. Had a friend that works in the PDX shop for Knight tell me to put the v band clamp on with the turbo loose and then tighten the turbo down. After i loosened the turbo and tightened the v clamp tightened the turbo back down all was good again. You never know. Might help.

Yes, I built it up with electrical tape. I thought that would be temporary until I found something better, but its still there.

Break out the wallet and send him some money, Brother.

I have a feeling this is going to be a great mod. I'm waiting to see how it works out for the folks that pull on occation.

Could we get a picture of racedaymechanic's "kit"? This swap is in the queue for me, I just want to get a visual. Thanks.

Has anybody come up with a vacuum can and a tune for the waste gate yet? I know some tuners have an ATT specific tune. Has anyone done one for this mod or any suggestions for one?

Any program should work fine whether it meant for a large turbo or not. It spools fast enough, low enough RPM that its not a problem.

So many people run away from the vacuum setup I doubt anyone would sell one, and that level of control is not as necessary on a larger turbo since it will flow a lot better without opening the wastegate. You could make your GM actuator hook up to the wastegate lever.

The reason I ask is many people with turbos other that stock have had thier custom tunes tweaked to better suit the turbo.

Yes, the main reason to customize it for a larger turbo is to prevent a lot of black smoke down low before the turbo spools, and keep it at higher RPM with higher RPM shifts and what not to keep it spooled. This specific turbo, the HX40WII is not a concern in that respect, as it starts spooling around 1000rpm. It will work fine with tunes meant for the stock turbo or large turbos. It still might be good to have less low rpm fueling, but your foot is the real control there.

If you get a larger HX40, or ATT then the specific tweaks to take more advantage of high RPM horsepower may be advantageous, and near stock low RPM timing to help spool it. The HX40WII is like in the middle, not small, not large.

Good answer. That’s just what I thought. So what I think I'm after is this. GM rolled a truck out of the factory that despite its limitations could be driven by your Grandma with no worries about high egt's and over boosting the engine. The ECM has the ability to control boost. I need to have this level of reliability in a daily driver that would do occasional towing of just under 10k lbs, get better fuel economy and be able to pull up hills. Idiot resistant so to speak.
