I've been trying to get a diesel for my '89 1 ton dually. And I've read up about the 6.2 and heard bad things. But I figured what the hell. I like an underdog.

I bought this '89 1/2 ton 4x4 with a 6.2 for $700. Looks like hell but runs like a champ. I'll be swapping the 6.2 into the 2wd dually and swapping the 454 into my Blazer. It came with a 700R but the dually has a turbo 400, can I make the 2wd 400 work? And if so how? I'll sell the trans/t case and scrap the rest. And then sell the 350 that came in the Blazer so I should come close to breaking even.

Does the 6.2 have a vacuum pump on it?

You will need one for the modulator on the T400 to work.

You will also have to have the vacuum regulator that goes on the throttle linkage on the injector pump which varies the vacuum to the T400 based on throttle position.

You will need a 6 bolt diesel torque converter for the t400. Im not sure what else- maybe the governor so it will shift right for the diesel.

On a 6.2 its on the rear of the engine behind the intake manifold where the distributor is on a chevy gas engine.

In the pic its the one on the left with the flattened can looking thing.

Valve body is different and TC is different from Gasser to Diesel. You need a TH400 from a diesel and TC as well or it will be real unfriendly to drive as the stall speeds and shift pooints will be weird at best. Also need the kickdown trigger/switch that goes on the fuel pedal although you can live without that as long as you don't mind manually downshifting climbing hills etc.
6.2 is a good engine. Just not alot of power. Don't abuse it and it could easily last 350K miles.

Well I got a 2wd 700R for $113 at a pick a part and a friend is giving me another 700R for nothing. So I figure if one blows up I have a spare! I know it's not perfect but it'll get me on the road.

We're pulling the diesel out this weekend. I'm getting excited.
