How I got 3 MPG more

Was it pretty much stock when you got it? That was one thing I looked for when I bought mine. Mine didn't have rails in the back for a fifth wheel either. .

Yes, it was stock... I had already passed on one that had a programmer installed, it was fast, but had been ridden hard.
This one does have a gooseneck hitch installed, that was a concern, but, overall, very nice.

I replaced all 8 injectors for 2200 on a buddys 2002. They arnt that bad to change. If i had an LB7 with 2 bad injectors i would change all 8 in a heart beat caues the other ones arnt far behind. I have seen what a slightly stuck open injector can do to a pistion in a duramax.

I would have done all eight if I had been stuck with the job... but the dealer was paying, and I wasn't willing to pay the difference

I would still have the 6.5, if circumstances were different... Paid for, and it was in about the best shape since I bought it, remote Dipaco,
all oil leaks fixed, new injectors, timing chain....... I had made up my mind to see just how many miles a 6.5 could go before crapping out.
But son-in-law had to have a truck to work from, so it was this, or support him, daughter and granddaughter. I like the D'max, but not
too happy about the reasons for getting it... Oh well, I'm fortunate I was able to do it, I guess.

Tookie: You now have a new project on your hands for the future. You can rebuild the good old 6.5 to be better than before! ;)

Project Tookie Truck! ;) :D

Your dinosaur was a beautiful rig!......You had to GIVE it to him?.....I hope he knows what a present he got, wow, Talk about Santa Claus!

Technically, he's buying it... $3500.00, which is almost giving it away. Who knows how long it'll be before I get the money though, they are struggling right now.
As I said, it's better than the alternative!

Well done Tookie. You deserve the nice truck you have, it looks wonderful. If I could afford a D-Max I'd have one also.

Hats off to you for helping your daughter and family. Family's must come together in troubled times. Everyone must downsize.

Not only do you have a D-Max, but you also have an unlimited favor dispenser in the form of a son in law :)

So, not only did you take the poor man's pride away by basically gifting him a sweet diesel, but then you go out and buy a D-Max just to rub his nose in it. :)

Well, it turns out that the mileage increase isn't as great
as I thought, I'm getting between 16 & 18 MPG combined,
and just under 20 @ 65 MPH. That's with the Hypertech
on the 50 HP setting......
Which makes the combined mileage the same as, and highway a little better than, the 1997.
But with 150 or so more horsepower, and almost 200 more lb/ft, not too bad.
Still miss the 97 though.
Oh, and I had it tinted and Rhino lined, and new tires, used Hypertech.... this is adding up:D

I wish i had the power of the D-max. Overall my rig has come an insanely long way. I want to dyno it soo bad.. I went on a 2.5 hour trip the other day. Ended up calculating the mileage to 16.97 MPG's spending 3/4 of the trip between 65-70. Then the rest back road driving. (Picked up a front clip for my brother 3 deer ravaged '97 Silverado.) I remember bone stock 3 years ago locally i was averaging about 11 something MPG's.. Thank god for mods!

Nothing wrong with those numbers.

That's true, I just expected a little more... but the programmer I bought (used)
is around 5 or 6 years old, only paid 100 bucks for it - a newer one may have a
more efficient tune, but even if I picked up another 2 MPG, it'd take a long time
to make up the difference in money.

Could it be the winter blended fuel? I am not sure what you guys run down there. I always see better fuel mileage in the spring and summer months! Much better, sometimes 2 to 3 mpg's more.
