How big of a pain to change heater blower?

I'm getting tired of having to reach over and kick my blower motor so I invested in a new one. How big of a pain is it to change and can anybody give me some pointers on what has to come off?

The hardest part of changing the blower fan for me was getting the insulating cover off. IIRC once the cover is off there are 6 7mm screws holding it to the housing and of course the electrical plug. I pulled the glove box out too, for access.
 
step 1) buy a case of beer
step 2) drink 3 of em
step 4) move the passenger seat back as far as possible
step 4) have another beer
step 5) remove that fricken cover
step 6) another drink while feeling disgusted with all the cussing you just did. Then kick the cover around the garage a few times.

step 7) go ahead and finish the job.

finish the rest of the case.




At least this gives you an idea of the PITA it was for me.

Oh, the Beer for this particular job is actually a TOOL for this type of job. It's to keep you limber while your trying to get at that fricken cover.
 
easiest blower motor R&R I've ever done.....and I don't even drink :D

I do recall a small difficulty with the bracket that's built in to the lower dash - where it bolts to the side(in front of the door). Mine's a 92 so yours might be different. Other than that - 7mm, 1/4 " drive socket...there are a couple of screws on top of the blower motor IIRC that you have to break loose then spin the socket by hand.....can't recall if they hold the insulated, rubber cover on or not.
 
Don,t forget step 8 Go to chiropractor when done

Unless you a hobbit,, then you can just stand up while your doing the job.

Seems after the 3 beers you forgot to do step 3 whatever that is (hang a leak?) :)

On edit, I see now there are 2 step 4's... who says drinking doesn't impair? :)

Changing the resistor was hard enough!

Might be easier to remove the whole dash. LOL But really maybe.

Ive got this on my "to do" list as well. For 3 of our trucks :D

Our 92' has a piece of wood on the seat for the job of wacking the motor while driving. And our van has developed a leak so when it rains, the water collects in the blower housing!

I was amazed with how cheap they assembly is. I think it was about 26 bux.
 
I replaced my blower motor in about 5 minutes. Undo the 5 or 6 bolts. Pull the blower motor (might need to pry in a couple places). Then place the new motor in and make sure bolt holes line up and bolt it down. I think there is a ground on one of the bolts, but i'm not 100% sure.

My truck is just the right height that all I did was get on one knee and do the entire thing in a few minutes, or maybe I leaned on step bar... i don't remember lol.

Changing the resistor is harder then replacing the blower motor.

HAHAHA Matt. only you would notice that I missed the 3rd step hahaha.
Actually while typing my step by step procedure my hair on the back of my neck stood up and I guess I loss count due to the tramatic experience the blower cover was LOL.

Get this.....my new blower started to squeek only a few months after I installed it. Bastard dealer wouldn't warrenty it. It made my day.

I now listen to my rasio just a bit louder. Problem is solved.
 
just did mine in the 97. Only took 10 minutes. un bolt, yank and pull. didnt have a cover though
 
The truck did come with one, it was behind the seat. I can send it to you if you like Gerald :D
 
I get to where I'm lubing it before I install it the one end is just a felt pad and a bushing. So I oil the crap out of the pad.Even gone so far as to drill a hole in it to do it.
