HOLSET HX40W, non-gated HX40 & Super HX40?

I've been digging deep into getting the HX40w and have came across a few very different setups for wastegate and of course the non-wastegated 16cm 2 HX40 & Super HX40. Holset prices are everywhere and CKO are $300 +- but for this is not the deciding factor.

An interesting and gated HX40w is for fitment to 6.9 idi, 7.3 idi and a 8.something liter cummins and has a six (6) bolt exhaust outlet. However not sure of the turbine cm I see listings from 16cm 2 which I think is ideal then a 19cm 2 which is too big.

To add to my confusion there are different sized compressor and turbine wheels too.

Then there are the HX40w 3" exhaust outlet, 4" exhaust outlet, 6 bolt 4" exhaust outlet and different sized cm.

Finally the HX40 non-gated 16cm 2 uses 4" exhaust for best performance etc.

Super HX40.

What is everyone using?

After reading through this web I have concluded I don't want the HX40W ii however the HX40W 16cm 2 or super would be a good choice with some program tweeks.

I'll be running a CAC w/maybe 2 lb pressure drop across it will know more when upgrade is done.

I am going to be running an HX35 with a 12cm housing on my truck. The truck is getting an NV4500 but will be an auto for a bit with the HX on. People have good luck with the HX40WII but it is really a crap shoot as to what turbo you wind up with, the ebay sellers seem to have very little knowledge or control of what they sell. Depending on what happens with my HX35, I might go up to an HX40 with a 16cm housing. On an automatic truck, a 16cm housing would be okay since you only have to spool the turbo once. With a 5 speed, a smaller housing is beneficial for better spooling between gears.

Yea, the crap shoot part is what chased me away from the HX40w ii, I found it interesting that the HX40w 16cm 2 appears to spool better than other turbos w/16cm 2 turbine.

I have vids on you tube of the HX40 16cm2 Chinese knock off that could help you decide if that's the route you want take.

I have various vids of tunes posted from the stock chip and custom multi-tune.

There are also vids posted in a thread titled [turbo upgrade] over at the diesel place that shows pics of install and vids.

It really is a great all around performing turbo that can be used from a stock tune all the way up to heavily modded use.

Good luck in which ever turbo you choose as almost anything is better than a stock turbo.

robzombie4551 its was your high performance vid that sold me on this just a few days ago I must of watched a dozen times awesome.

Well I received my JMT HX40W T3 and suspect its a CKO via Great Britain as the balance certificate is from a firm there the cold side is 61mm hot is 64mm w/18cm 2 twin scroll 4" in/out paperwork claims it replaces the Super 40 # 4027888 for model year 01+. I'll be installing it w/racedaymechanic HX40 kit for now and will sleeve the S&B runner to adapt to it.

Plans are a Cummins N8 cobrahead 4" down pipe and oval tubing for complete 4" turbine to tail pipe exhaust and 4" airfilter to compressor runner.

Thats great news, and I really look forward to following along with your build. Please post lots of pictures as your installing it. :)

Yes please do post pics. If you sai it's marked from Great Britain, it's possible that it's a true holset as they are out of England last I heard.

18cm is a bit in the big side. If you have low gears that will help spool it up. A custom will be a must.

I'm waiting on some more small parts when they arrive I'll get going and shooting lots of images.

After a lot of digging I find this HX40w T3 18 cm2 = 1.34 ar +- turbine housing and has the same smaller turbine inlet w/gate valve port and larger volute found on factory Holset HX40w which may explain why they spool fast.

General consensus is that when compared with Garrett and Mitsubishi with the same sized cm the Holset and Holset CKO's spool faster. The Dodge Cummins 5.9 12 valve 6bt used an 18 cm2 turbine housing back in the early 1990's and these days it's used on everything from 5.9 to 8.2 liter over the road diesels.

I suspect I don't have to run very high boost levels get great results.

Found the Cummins cast 4" cobrahead downpipe is available as military surplus and exhaust brake can be had to attach to that or attach farther down exhaust system. I find the cobrahead enhances flow from turbine when tight turns are needed and see GM turbos have the design and FORD is expounding upon their new cobrahead down pipe enhancing their new diesel's performance and torque curve.

PAC commercial exhaust brakes fit well.

doesn't look like any Holset id numbers I've ever seen. Most notably on the compressor housing.

Looks like a copy to me....:(

I would be interested to know where you found the cummins downpipe and if more are available....:)

I'm about right at the limit of my gm8s, not much left to be found in there....:(

great white: yep a CKO, Cummins 8N cobrahead can be found through its NSN #, I have one checking for others too.

Thats a great looking turbo, and of course the downpipe is fantastic! I have have first hand experience with racedays new downpipes, and they certainly are first class.

Been reading tons of articles relating to the HX40 design and very impressed with all the reports w/18 cm2 turbine it spools faster than similar spec garrett or mitsu will see if that is true real soon. I already have a real nice tune from Heath so that will help.
