hi low gearbox or just change the gearing in the rear axel?

get a pop, ale, tea or water, sit back and read this. i believe all your questions will be answered:

believe laycock is what volvo used.

Yes, Laycock is the brand name of the OD that Volvo used. However, that Laycock OD is the item that Gearvendors bought so it is the predecessor to the GV unit. According to what I have been able to find the only difference between the Laycock and the GV is that GV went to a larger output shaft. I didn't research what the difference in size is though.

If you look for a Volvo OD you want the P series OD as it is heavier duty than the J series. To use the Laycock you may have to install it as a divorced unit. You'll have to contact GV to see if/how many parts interchange to the Laycock, including the tranny adapters.

There are some cautions to this application too, for example you must shift the unit out/off when deccelerating down a hill...no grade braking. A gear Vendor rep told me this will shorten the life of the unit....quickly. The unit can be wired to work in sync with your auto trans and shifts itself requiring you to only turn it on or off as needed.

This is some VERY good info to know. Do you know if the shift controller will automatically shift the GV unit out if deccelerating, or is that a manual operation?

manual, up/down to a certain rpm. mine drops out around 20 mph. a misconception is splitting gears. it won't engage in first gear, speed/rpm isn't high enough for that operation. but i don't shift mine between gears, i wanted it only for the OD. have it set on auto, around 45 it will engage all by itself, if i want a higher rpm at that speed, i either put it in D and wait till i hit 60, then put it in 2nd OD.

From the Gear Vendors' FAQ website :
"The GEAR VENDORS, on the other hand, is built like an automatic. It has the expensive and reliable reaction planetary system, which is why it's compact and cylindrical in shape like your automatic. The GEAR VENDORS is designed to shift under any and all throttle conditions continuously, so when you need power you can go up or down just half a gear at a time (GearSplitting). Sure the GEAR VENDORS has always been the most expensive, but it also offers far greater performance and quality. After the GEAR VENDORS is installed in your vehicle you will have twice as many underdrive ratios as you do now (1st, 1st-over, 2nd & 2nd-over) plus an overdrive gear (3rd-over) suitable for towing. If you also have factory overdrive you will now have 3-overdrive gear choices. Six or eight forward ratios that you can shift to sequentially, one after the other, for power unmatched by any other auxiliary transmission. There are many more differences ie: Automatic shifting, pressurized lubrication, fluid filters, 4500# roller clutch, etc., that you can read about elsewhere in this web site."

Dejaaa, what's up with this? Are they hyping the product or what? :???:

don't know. when i'm driving, i have it set on auto. maybe if it is on manual and the foot switch is used, it will go in on every gear. not sure about that though. can't argue with what they say. doesn't work that way for me.

Wouldn't be the first time advertizing says one thing, real world says different...:agreed:

they are available for the gear vendor but laycock has been out of business for a number of years. doubt if the 4L80 was even around when they were doing business. i see them for sale(gear vendor) on craigslist, used, for 200.00 - 400.00. you also need a shaft coupling. if you go divorced, mount a frame cross member and there's no need for an adapter. both ends will have a yoke, trans won't need to be modified either. you can hook up a toggle switch to engage, need a bright light hooked to the backup switch that will alarm if unit is on and backing up. unit will be destroyed if you try to back up with it engaged.

Living in Sweden i go find one in the junkyard, god knows we got enough old volvos with overdrive there. Should i round a few up for ya´ll?
