Help with my Newly Bought 6.5 Turbo

I looked at my truck and it does have the heavy guage wire straight from drivers side battery terminal to the alternator, and then a 2 wire harness on the alternator. I looked in the service manual and it doesnt have anything specific about wiring, need a wiring diagram. Mine could have been modified in the past, or a 1500 could be different.

When you say it flashed 9 times all 3 times, do you mean it flashed 18? Flash..(short pause)..Flash 8 more times.

And did you allow it to continue? It should keep flashing, and then repeat itself when its done. Did you clear the codes and get a 12 before starting the truck?

No I mean once I plug the paper clip into the A and B port....Turn the key to the on postion.

It flashes once then pause.

Then Flashes 9 times then pause.....

Flashes once....

Then flashes 9 times then pause....

Flashes once then pause.....

Then 9 more times then Pause....

But then flashes 2 times then pause......Repeats the 9 flashes then flashes 2 more times. A total of 3 times like before.

Then flashes 3 times before pause.....Repeats the 9 flashes then pause....

Sorry....Guess I'm doing it wrong some how. Must be the Ford Blood going to my head :)

Thats a little amusing, I can see how you got confused.

you are getting 19, 29 and 39, coincidentally all ending in 9.

the short pause is just a digit divider, so 1,9 is 19 long pause 2,9 is 29

So 19 means crankshaft position reference error, so could be a bad crankshaft sensor, or it might just mean it was unplugged for diagnosis.

Same with 29, its glo-plug circuit fault, usually becuase someone took out glo-plug fuse when checking codes.

39 though is a transmission code, TCC stuck OFF, so you wont ever get torque converter lockup I guess.

Did you clear codes before checking? With jumper in and IGN ON depress both pedals for 15 secs, then check that you only get 1 flash followed by 2 flashes, which is 12.

Before clearing codes make sure there is a fuse in the GLO-PLUG fuse spot under the steering wheel. Does the GLO PLUG light come on when you first turn IGN ON?

Also make sure the crank position sensor is plugged in. There is a harness by the thermostat and oil fill tube that goes down into the crank sensor. The harness should be easily accessable to unplug and plug it in as the sensor has a long wire tail.

All codes should have been cleared, battery disconnect is another way to clear codes and the truck came without batteries. Leo

Yep, thank you, but also want to see that code 12 comes up to say diagnostics all working. In 94 it doesnt flash first before other codes, only when no other codes exist.

Some 94's & 95's don't flash code 12 even when none are present, mine is one. Leo
Edit: It doesn't show a code 12 when other codes are stored.

Well that's why I'm here ...:)

So would the code 19 make it run rough,Pour white smoke out the exhaust,Oil Fill tube,Oil dip stick tube and the Air Box??

I called the parts store and they said they don't list the Crank Sensor. Dealer only item??

Should I start with the code 19 first off or worry about something else first??

Once again THANKS for all the help.

Can you answer the other questions about your Glo-Plugs and have you been able to clear the codes and get a single code 12?

Were you able to find the harness for the crank sensor? And ensure that it is in fact plugged in? It is not a cheap sensor, and if you change it you have to reset your TDCO, which would be good for you to do anyway, but you need a scanner or a OBD1/ALDL to USB cable and the software to run on your computer/laptop (about $200 and you get cable and software from Engh Motors). That cable and software or a scanner will also be able to show you if the sensor is working correctly. Along with all the other sensors.
Heath Diesel sells them, and the dealer should or here is a picture of one

You get smoke out of the air box? try running it with the hose from the valve cover to the intake plugged up and the CDR (huge "tuna can" PCV valve thing on the valve cover) venting into air. See if that helps at all.

Also see if it runs any different or at all with the optical sensor unplugged (the sensor on top of the IP, not the tall cylinder but the short black harness). With a 19 its possible that it is running in limp mode. If both the crank and optic sensors are faulty(or unplugged) it will not run at all. With the optic sensor unplugged it will most certainly be running in limp mode if at all, and see if that is how it is acting now.

On the glow plugs....The light does come on before I start the Truck. You hear a click then the glow plug light shuts off.

Harness is plugged in to the Crank Sensor.

I'll try one more time to reset the codes...But as of now I can't get a Code 12.

If its stubborn on clearing codes, after depressing both pedals for 15 seconds, do it again for 15 seconds then turn off IGN and turn it back on the check for code 12.

Otherwise take battery cables off for like 15 minutes.

Getting a code 12 or at least clearing codes is a step in "clearing" the PCM of any fault

First off I want to say I'm new to this site, So hello Everyone.

Reason I'm here is I just picked up a 1994 Chevy K2500 4x4 Suburban over the weekend. With the 6.5 Turbo Diesel Engine in it.

Where are you located? Might save you a lot of trouble if you found
a member nearby, and got them to let you eyeball their truck for a while.

Billboard in the back of one of his photo album shots indicates he's near Henderson Kentucky. Unfortunately, that's outside of my range. Cool toys though Z. The ATV looks like fun.
Patience and details will get you through this.

You are more than welcome. The people on this site are 'givers' and I was trying to pay it forward for help and knowledge received.

I hope you can get the help you need to get the Burb running right. Any progress?
