Help Understanding Potential Upgrades - For Planning...

:hihi:Okay. I have been here since I bought the burb end of last summer. I really appreciate all of the helpful advice and knowledge to be found here. :thumbsup: Now that the burb is finally running daily I am thinking of the next steps and would like to pick your brains again.

My goals are similar to many of you:
1. Reliability
2. Reliability :skep:
3. Fuel Economy; 17.2mpg on last 22 gal fill up.
4. Driveability/Comfort
5. Long trip towing with family and/or friends. ATVs with camping gear, maybe a boat some day?

Testing so far has been on my 22 mile one-way commute with 14 miles of it at 60-65mph highway. The driveability could be improved as it seems 'labored' cruising at highway speed along with some vibration that could be normal?

Now; based upon what I have been reading I have the following things I would like to understand better and see if you guys think they are good ideas.
1. What does the -1.9ish TDCO do for you over the GM -0.7 recommended? Any dangers? Currently at -0.7
2. If I do the 4" exhaust what can I expect?
3. Should I do something with crossover too? I have seen larger and smaller ones done on here????
4. Could I need a new harmonic balancer or is it normal to have some vibration?
5. ATT for the driving habits I have mentioned?
6. Recommendations? There was a thread I was a while back with recommendations but I can't seem to find it.

Obviously I would try the easy/low cost items first once I understand them.

Don't worry about the timing, there is little difference.

4" exh. is the first mod I would make, it will really wake up your truck

ATT is also with the exh, those two will benefit towing and help mpg.

Gauges

A tune will also give good towing power.
 
When I bought my truck in 07, the Priorities of Work:
1. Safety
2. Preventative Maintenance
3. Performance/comfort (improvement, not “tuning”)
4. Cosmetics

Once the first three minus performance were covered, then I've gone for it. Now it is a balance of Want vs. Need.

4" exhaust with a mandrel bent cross over, for me, eliminated heating issues on climbs and hard accelerations. This in addition to waking up the truck somewhat. So ditch the stock cross over. Once you got it off and compare to the new one you'll understand why.

Tune and Turbo Master is what woke my truck up.
Better Air Cleaner set up. OEM K-47 or aftermarket cold air intake.
Read up on the ATT in the Performance section. War Wagon's recent write up is very good. Most maintain you wouldn't need the intercooler with the ATT.

Exhaust is the first, ditch the soot trap and open it up to 4in, look into a good muffler to ease the sound for the family. Also, upgrade the crossover. Assuming your intake system is ok this should take care of your labored feel while cruising.

ATT will really open up the top end of your RPM band.

I have done most of the mods around, with the goal of long trip travel and reliability. The burb is very comfortable and a dream on the highway. I have put about 50 thousand miles a year since I have owned it. There is not a better vehicle to travel in when you need a truck.

snorkel removal - 99 model so there is no snorkel
pmd relocate - front bumper, Heath Diesel Unit
damper - no
FFM relocate - raised FFM

Brian,
I was thinking DiamondEye 4" with the muffler. I have seen some people going bigger and some smaller on the crossover. That one confuses me. So what do you consider an upgrade for the crossover?
 
The main thing with the cross over is it should be mandrel bent, the factory pipes were often double walled and the inner section would be collapsed.
 
When I purchased my Diamond Eye/warp speed 4 in I also purchased a crossover. The main thing you want is mandrel bent. I think mine is a 2.5 inch crossover. I am only guessing and someone here will chime in on this but anything 2 inches or above will be good.
 
Warp Speed is the exhaust system, I think it is a rebadged Diamond Eye. If someone else can confirm that it would be great. The crossover was purchased at the same time so I think it was also a Warp Speed.

DiamondEye is not making xover at this time. Their 4" system cant be beat for the money. I sell mine at $299 shipped!!
On other diesels I owned going to a 4" got me 1MPG better. On my Burb I don't remember.
A 195* tstat was the best thing I did 3MPGs over the 180*
 
That is not mandrel bent. Look how the corners are crushed. I don't think that would be any better than the original.

Thats a POS stay away. Go with a mandrel bent one piece.
I posted earlier DE is not making one, but that was the info I had months ago. I'll call tomorrow and see if they might be making one yet.
 
Just got off the phone, still no xover pipe for us:incazzato:. And, No stainless systems in the works. They can make one, but it will be expensive and be months before they started on it.
