Help me ID this engine.

bison, does your have the same lack of 506 in engine valley? how about the same lifting hook?
Yes. there's 506 cast mark behind the flywheel though.
I just got bare blocks nothing bolted on.The date casting marks are rather indistinguable on both

There's however at least one Chinese block maker casting the diamond and 506 in the valley, which led me to believe that the US 6.5 factory may be deeper involved in the Chinese market than what one might think.

There is still so much confusion out there about the origen of these blocks

That lift hook looks like no later than 95.
here couple pics to compare with

I believe clearwater head service in florida sells them for around $8-900.
That lifting eye can be bolted onto any 6.2 or 6.5 block/head. It is part of the 90?-95 accessory bracket system.

I thought I saw CCH blocks on ebay for $1200.
I tried searching on there for them and came up with nothing. Too much "snake oil" to go through to look at everything. 1800 results for 6.5 diesel.
The chineese AFTERMARKET blocks could be that much. I was relying on memory[not the best]

I know what you mean. You get different results by just typing: 6.5 chevy diesel or 6.5 gmc diesel.

I spoke with Clearwater a day or two before I scored the GEP Block.

They sell the aftermarket blocks for $1200 plus freight.

It was a day or so after I spoke with them that I found that GEP Block for $550.

Had to drive 40 miles round trip to get it. Beats the heck out of paying for tanscontinental freight.

Crank is scheduled to be delivered on Monday.

In speaking with a GEP rep last week, he tells me that all the GEP Blocks are cast at the Navistar foundary (Not china)

He also mentioned that their heads are cast here too. Seems that they tried having some heads cast in China, but the quality was all over the sky, with some making QC standards and others just being crap.

Bottom line was they pulled everything back onshore to keep the QC where it had to be.

We spoke to some length about the China Blocks too. They had purchased several from various vendors and cut them all apart to see what they were all about.

Some blocks were "fairly good" he claimed and others had major "Core shift" with 3/8 thick cylinder walls on one side and 1/8 thick on the other side.

No way to tell unless you spend the $$$$ to have one SONIC tested in all the holes.

This is not a cheap endevour, especially with 8 holes.

The stories and such with these 6.5 blocks is a real Payton Place for sure.

The backdoor deals that surround the blocks that got loose from Navistar is a real mess too.

Just really hard to believe much of anything.

If you buy a complete engine (6500) from GEP and it comes from them Or one of their outlets your pretty well assured of what your getting.

Beyond this, the waters get really muddy, and quick.

I dont believe I have ever seen such a murky mess of stories and BS concerning any engine parts since I have been swinging a wrench (40 years)

The only difference on the blocks with the center mount turbo will be the PAD for the turbo to bolt to, and also the oil feed and drainback ports.

The heads bolt on the same as any other head. The van and HMMWV heads have the 60 degree intake bolt holes is all.

Missy

pardon me but i should have said hummer engines have different angle bolts

As Bison said, a 6.5 block is a 6.5 block is a 6.5 block.

The heads are what are different. N/A and side mount light truck application heads have 90* intake manifold bolt holes. Valley Mounted turbo van and hummer application heads have 60* intake manifold bolt holes. The 90* and 60* heads are completely interchangeable on a 6.5 block.

6.5 blocks are not all the same . Some of the oil cooler line holes are different sizes and there is not enough room to get an adapter in to go up to the larger size without hitting the exhaust manifold . Don't ask me how I know .

Why were you going to a larger size?

You can get hydr elbows 1/2 to 5/8.they fit with no problem,i done it on mine.
If the exhaust corner is in the way,use a grinder with a zip disc to make it fit.;)
