Damn Justin, you just completlydiscouraged me from putting a block heater in my CUCV. May go for the heater hose one instead now....
So how could this be done without danger of dropping it in ? Drill a hole in it and pry it out ? I have to do this soon and this thread is not making me all warm and fuzzy....
Take a sharpened flat blade screwdriver (medium size) and punch through the middle of the plug (drill a hole if you want but you're gonna leave a chip in the coolant). Stick a piece of .060 or so wire through a couple of inches worth with a hook bent in the end. Knock the bottom in like vanman said and if you went too far, the wire will hang on to it so you can get the needlenose visegrips on it when you fish it back to the hole.
BTW does it matter which plug you put the heater in ? I forgot to look under the 94 before I sold it to see which one it was in.

Did you leave the plug in there? That's probably what I would have done. Won't hurt anything.

I guess I did. But the last two winters I didn't have EFI Live so it was really slow. Are you comparing your Dmax to a 6.5?

It would be resting right on the bottom of coolant passage and the cylinders don't need as much cooling there. Bill fills his up with hardblock to within 1" from the top IIRC. I'm anal enough I have to get it outta there
