Help! Just droped freeze plug in block

Had the same happen to me on my old gasser (not a heater install, just a leaking plug)

I found a small pick-up tool in my toolbox, the kind where 3 wire fingers poke out when you push the plunger and then retract and grab when you release the plunger.

It took a few tries (and a few choice words) but it did finally grab it and let me pull it out:smile5:

Never had to do this myself, I'll just throw out a couple of ideas - maybe they will help, maybe not.

Maybe duct tape wrapped backwards on your finger?

How 'bout some chewing gum on a stick/finger?

I've used super glue to hold washers/nuts together while trying to thread a bolt in tight places. How about super glue/gorilla glue on the end of a zip tie (the socket end)? Dab a little on, then stick the zip into the hole, hold the zip against the plug until it sets up.

You might at least be able to lift it to a point where you can grab it with some small needle-nose pliers.

If thats the same one you punched a hole in earlier you might be able to fish it with a bent coat hanger. The few I've lost in there the hardest part was getting it back out the hole. I ended up using vice grips and after many unsucessful attempts finally got it pulled thru. Ideally you want to hit it so it turns sideways in the hole but I know it doesn't always work that way. Good luck

I popped almost all of them in my new engine while i was replacing them with brass ones. I got a flat blade scre drive to turn them towards me, then i got a big set of needle nose vise grip pliers and grabbed on to one side and pulled hard, it popped right back out. Might not be as easy since its in the truck now that i think about it...

Last time I did that I gave up after a loooooonnnnnnggggggg time and left it. Cooling system didn't seem to notice over the next couple of 100 thou miles.

Maybe this has happened to someone else and someone has a trick?
Yup. More than once. Use a grabber tool or a magnet to get the plug back up towards the hole. Reach in with a pair of channel lock pliers and grab the raised edge. Use the edge of the freeze plug hole as a lever point and rock the channel locks backwards. This will exert enuff force to pull the plug out sideways. Works every time.

I got it guys! Thanks for all the reply's!!!!
I was finally able to fish it out of there! What a pain that was, the plug was like brand new and did not want to bend to come back out. Im stiff as a board!
thank you all again so much!

I give it the old 10 min try, if not, it stays, ):h

This is what I shoulda done. Now Ill have to work Saterday to make up today, time and a half so it works out ):h

Good one! Bet you won't do that ever again...;)

Got that right Mike. Didnt need a block heater that damn bad :D

I've never used my block heater. I've seen it before when I replaced the head gaskets. The cord has never even been fished out the front. And it gets well below 0 here. Farenheit 0, not that wimpy celcius 0.

Are you comparing your Dmax to a 6.5?

Damn Justin, you just completlydiscouraged me from putting a block heater in my CUCV. May go for the heater hose one instead now....:D
So how could this be done without danger of dropping it in ? Drill a hole in it and pry it out ? I have to do this soon and this thread is not making me all warm and fuzzy....
