Help a Brother Out #2

Once a long few years back I had done a front brake job for a guy and replaced his calipers. I had the curious cat moment and popped the piston from the caliper. You’d never imagine how much muddy crud was behind the piston!

I don’t know how a brake system gets all that crap in there but they do get nasty!!
I wonder if it's from the brake fluid. That stuff gets nasty when it gets old

Thanks to the generosity of one of the guys on here ( I don't know if he wants to be mentioned or not so I'm not going to say who. ) I received a solinoid today for the truck..after opening the box it dawned on me I've never changed just a solinoid always changed the whole starter before...so before I do it which will hopefully be tomorrow is there anything I should know?? Is it pretty straightforward? Do I have to take the starter out or can it be done with it in the truck..

I didn't have a problem getting the bolts out or the bracket when I changed the tranny..my problem I had was trying to get it down out of the truck cause without braking anything.. I had trouble getting it to slide down out of there.

Yup. Remove the bolt holding the starter motor lead to the solenoid, the there is either two or three small bolts holding the solenoid to the starter. Remove those, lift the back end of the solenoid to clear the motor lead and slide it offa there.
Hang on to that old solenoid. Do a little searching as money permits. We used to be able to get repair components for the solenoid. Came with a new cap and terminal lugs.

So once I get the starter out does the solinoid just ondolt from it then bolt the new one on??
There is a little more to it than that. But it is pretty much unbolt and bolt the new one on. Maybe search changing the solenoid on a 6.5 diesel starter.

Sometimes I have had issues dropping the starter out. Seems like I just rocked it around a little and then it almost fell out. I can't remember if I pulled the inner fender or just the mudflap. The inner fender makes things easier. I know I have done it both ways. The inner fender only takes about 15 minutes, if the bolts aren't rusty.

Once I get out there I'll look.. but if it slides out like that it seems it could be done while still in the truck..but I could be wrong.. might not be able to get to the bolts with it in.. was raining this morning so had to wait for it to stop to get out there.. I think it's like 28 degrees today with the wind chill...you know. ..summer time at @ak diesel driver house..lol

@jrsavoie thanks for link.. watched a video by average Joe ... Doing it on his suburban... He mad it look massively simple lol....could be that I had other stuff in the way at the time cause I was dropping the tranny and already had stuff disconnected..
BTW what the heck is duck duck go ???? Never heard of that one

Thanks @ak diesel driver it still amazes me that I can type on this phone and someone 3 thousand miles away can see what I typed , walk out in there garage, look at something and type back a answer to me in minutes.. so easy to get info from anywhere in the world now.....God I sound old lol

DDGo is just a search engine without spies attached to it.
