Got home from work and had my new P-series chip from heath waiting on me. My first impressions of it is that I am really impressed. I only drove about 15 miles or so, empty of course. Acceleration is vastly improved.

The paperwork that came with the chip said that it will need 2 days or so to get use to the particulars of the truck.... Any guesses as to what needs to get use to what?

I would be surprised if there is some adaptive learning, except from the driver. I switch chips all the time, I switch between tunes repeatedly. It may be something on OBD2 PCMs, since they do have a bit more memory.

That was my thought too.... All decisions for fuel delivery, timing, shift scheduling, etc all come from the chip, so other than the driver, there shouldn't be anything that as to "adapt" to the particulars of the new chip.

Heath has been quoted in saying there is some

He does.... Part of the paperwork that came with the chip described a "approximately 2 day period" during which the computer will get accustomed to the new chip and driving style of the owner. The paperwork also had 1994-1995 6.5 diesel printed at the top, so unless the adjustment period was a blanket statement, it must apply to OBD I as well.

In gas vehicles there was some o2 sensor learning, but ours will dump and dump fuel with no boost until you code for not enough boost. Timing is just as is programmed per rpm and fuel rate. Fuel rate is just as programmed for rpm and throttle position. The tranny might have something, that would be the one thing I would see as possible, but with changes in chips it does have an instant change in shift points and firmess. The tranny may learn how to not kill itself though. Any learning must be stored on the PCM board since the chips are readable only. So maybe just swapping chips really wouldnt cause any learning unless you unplug the PCM from power. Unless it has nonvolatile memory like where the TDCO is stored and it never erases unless you initiate the learn or zap it in a way it doesnt like.

Hows it running? Notice any mileage difference?

My dad has a 95 C3500HD dump truck and it can use all the help it can get, but it still needs to be just as drivable. I noticed on the website that it is programmed for automatics, can this chip be used on a 5-speed?

It's running great. There is a world of difference in power, the chip is the last upgrade that I have done, everything else in my signature was already in place when I installed the chip.

Mileage stayed the same, as far as I can tell so far anyway. I have not put a ton of miles on the new chip yet, but I track fuel mileage very close, so I will be able to tell for sure once I get more miles on it.

I made a 770 mile drive from Savannah GA to Ashland OH three weeks ago, with the stock chip, and averaged 18.21 MPG. I made the same trip this past weekend with the Heath chip and averaged 18.02. Everything else between the two trips was pretty much the same as far as load, speed, weather, etc. The route was identical for both trips.

EGT's were no problem at all. The "worst part", EGT wise, of the trip is a six mile long stretch of I-77 that climbs 1,500 feet in elevation. I kept the cruise set at 70 and the truck never whimpered or downshifted going up the grade. The max EGT during that 6 mile climb was 550* F, post turbo.

Yes it can. You can't (or at least SHOULDN'T) order the chip through the website... Give them a call to order the chip. They will get all the particulars about the truck it's going in over the phone and make sure they send you the right chip for your application. You will need to know what the model number of your IP is and what the 4 letter code on the stock chip is when you call.

Hey thanks for the info!!

I will be looking into this chip for sure, especially since the mileage didn't change much. The truck gets 10 mpg anyway :) so its not a huge concern. Good call on ordering over the phone, that sounds much better.

Thanks again and good luck!
