BTW, what the heck does the ballast do?

H I D : High Intensity Discharge (I would have said Voltage instead of intensity....) When switching on, the ballast apply a 20 Kvolts discharge at the xenon gas inside the bulb that makes the light coming on. Once the gas excited and making light, it takes a few seconds to completely establish full light, while the ballast maintains a 12 Kvolts tension at the bulb to keep it lighting.
