Has anyone actually installed an Optimizer 6500

There was a real nice gentleman there at W.W.Williams, named Rod Townsend, but he passed away about a year ago. He was a real stand up guy, used to like talking to him when he came to the shop to check on his warranty parts. He tried to sell me a P400 a couple of years ago, just didn't have the cash or need it, IIRC it was only $400 more than the Optimizer.

I haven't met Rod's replacement, I'm assuming its the Ron Taylor mentioned earlier. W.W.Williams is a stand up company, I wouldn't worry.

I'd get the P400 though, since its only a little more.

I have installed i p400 into a customers H1. I didnt remove the oil pan and check the bottom end. but there is definitely a difference in the weight and build quality of this as compared to any other 6.5. There did seem to be a performance difference in the standard 6.5 and the p400. I have a place I do some acceleration tests and it the p400 was 2mph faster. We had Kennedy do us a custom tune for it and it will hold its own against the 06 Alpha H1s with the dmax.

OK, so there's a difference between a "6500 Optimizer" and a "P400". What IS the difference?

-Rob :)

Yes the 6500 as Am General used in the 2004 h1 and the late model HMMV's is basicly the same as any other 6.5 the main differences were it was controlled by a Caterpillar computer system and used a mass airflow sensor it also has an egr system with an egr cooler to meet emissions. As for the p400 it has a lot of improvements: beefier block, forged crank and rods, a main cap girdle, cast aluminium oil pan, higher flowing heads with redesigned prechambers and pre cups. I can post up some pics of the one I installed in the morning.

Hi guys, just registered here but have been around for ages on the other sites. The p400 is the latest greatest from amg. It is easily identified by the bed plate between the oilpan & the block. The bedplate incorporates all the main bearing caps into one piece & is easy to see as an extra piece of cast iron between the pan & block. The optimizer 6500 is the updated version of gms 6.5l diesel. From the research I have done, they did some redesign on the block & head castings in late 2001, & had the navistar foundry start casting them with better metallurgy. This is the standard replacement engine sold now in two versions, the high compression version for land vehicles & the 18:1 version for marine apps. I have had the marine version from penn diesel in my truck for over 3 years & 70,000 miles with mods. No problems so far. The p400 would be my first choice now but was not available in 06 when I did mine. The oil pan that comes on the p400 will not fit in a truck & there is no aftermarket available yet so you would have to fabricate one to fit. Not a small task from what I have seen.

It has been said that the p400 oil pan will fit the OBS solid axle trucks (at least 4x4).

So the Optimizer was started in 01? I don't want to jack the thread but does anybody know how to tell an 01' 6500 optimizer block apart from your typical off the shelf 6.5L?

Used to be the double diamond navistar logo cast in the valley meant it was the navistar cast newer design. Sadley, the chinese copys now have this logo as well. There was a thread a long time ago where Kennedy said you could tell the chinese blocks because the julian date was the same on all of them.

I'm thinking I need to pull my manifold sometime soon...:D My trucks engine was replaced in 01' compliments of the USAF... I wonder...

yours might be but i doubt it....... your truck is a retired GSA ..... no "M" designation.

However, wrong on that because I left Active Duty AF in 1997..... but I am sure all of our blue C series trucks, tahoes, and Suburbans were GSA or G10........

reason I say USAF is its a retired AF crew Cab truck. I've got the nonclemature in the engine bay as well as the batteries(optima yellow tops) have USAF March 2003 engraved in them. Along with numerous numbers and letters. My guess a part number or date relating back to the original purchase.

Records show the engine was replaced in 01'(performed by Jasper). I doubt that I actually have an optimizer block in there, but nevertheless it would be cool if it actually was. Just "ironic" if you will, that the motor was replaced in 01'. The same year the optimizer was introduced.
