Harmonic Balancer

well, Advance doesnt have one in stock anywhere, so I cant do it today. I was thinking about doing it at the same time as pulling my fan to re-fix the clutch fan adjustment. No sense going in there twice.
Oh, my other question, online Advance lists two, one looks like what you have, the other is different and appears to have a pulley on it. What the heck is that?

That is the HB PULLEY.

It mounts to the HB with 4 bolts, that is the one your belt rides on. It also has rubber to cushion the accesories from crank jolt, and the crank from ACC jolt. That should be replaced also if any signs or wear, cracked rubber, or bolts out of center (meaning the rubber let go and it spun).

Pulley is around 80, HB is around 50. Advance had to overnight the one I got.

Its a Dorman unit, made in vagina, err, china :)

I want to add to this china talk. I bought a crank pulley that failed out of the box causing me replace all sorts of other things assuming that was good because it was one week old.... perhaps my fault for assuming a new part is good.... I think that statement sums it up.

thanks, I guess I better look at mine close before I end up with the truck apart and not enough parts to put it back together.

Easy to tell, the pulley has the grooves for the 6 rib belt, the balancer is smooth.

I know how to tell them apart, what I meant was whether I'd need both or just the hb. I ordered the hb, but I won't change it until I know the pulley part is ok.

Well the new HB is on. Old one looked a little rattyy but no obvious problems like peeling rubber or anything serious. Just wanted to get it done because the miles are up there and I was worried about it failing. Job went fairly smoothly, didn't get to drive it yet, only thing I did notice is that weird noise it always made when you shut it off is now gone. Sounded kind of like it rocked back and forth once very quickly before stopping. Now it just plain stops.

Matt, I can't thank you enough for putting in the pictures and everything here to help me do it. Never done one before, and I'm the type of guy that can read instructions all day and not get it (hence the mistake on my fanclutch mod) but pictures really help me a lot. So again, thank you for taking the pics and putting them up, it was a lifesaver for me. You the man!

little ways, maybe 3/8? it turned on pretty easy with the wrench after that. snout was a little scubbed up with rust, cleaned it up a little with a rag and PB, didnt feel it at all while installing it.
Ace, the pulley part looked fine, why I didn't replace it. Whys it stopped making the weird shut off noise?
Also re-adjusted the fan clutch. PITA that is, be easy if there was a square slot, but theres a corner cut off so its hard to judge where it catches. backed off a hair from where I was, turned on at 165 or so. Hope it's up around 200 now. Now I'll never know if it's set right until I tow again, my engine never gets above thermostat temp unless I'm working hard to tow a hill. I can drive for weeks without ever hearing the fan.

IT is a great buy... Unfortunately I just moved and all of a sudden broke. (At least the rig is running tit though)... Damnit.

A pure boxtruck would be cheaper for sure, and I could set up the inside really nice with more interior room without the side boxes, However, side access is a plus in one way, and a minus in another.

6.5 a huge plus, as the most dependable, easiest engine to fix, and cheapest to maintain engine I've ever owned. Plus diesel. Heavy gassers is just like throwing money out the window.

That van in a gasser would barley make it from filling station to filling station. We have 2 of them at work. They are deplorable on gas. 4 mpgs.
