Hard start with advent of white smoke

AK,
So did the new ip fix your problem? your problem does sound strikingly similar to mine.
With the one exception, that I have found a leak in the return lines on mine.

I am replacing all the return lines today so I don't have to think about them any more.

To tell you the truth I haven't installed it yet I started using a medium size dose of oil in my fuel tank instead of my occasional dose of stanadyne and it has gotten better not gone but better. Still on my list of things to do might wait until this winter if it will let me.

Back from the garage again,
Well after observing the air in the ip return line I decided to replace all the fuel lines. So off with the intake. All the fuel lines all the way to the hard lines coming from the LP are new with nice clamps holding them on. Got it started again and test drove it. It seems to have noticeable more get up and go. And the turbo is spooling up faster?? also the LP doesn't pump as long when I shut off the engine. I hadn't seen any fuel leaking but it was obvious when I took the lines off that some of them had been and were in bad shape.

I will see if I keep fuel in the clear line overnight and see if it helps the starting problem. I'll keep you posted.

FYI everything in the fuel manager looked fine and filter was a light grey.

After shutoff, the LP will run as long as there's oilpressure.Leaking lines or not.
The fuel system is a closed loop from pick up in the tank to return line that ends also in bottom of tank.

Well I rechecked the clear return line in the morning and I still have a big leak. I think I found it on one of the injector return lines. It seems to be holding I will recheck in morning.

Meanwhile I have rechecked to see if any codes showed up and found 15,84,99. I expect 15(ECT) but I did not expect 84 and 99. They are both APP related. I have read the diesel supplement to the factory repair manuals and it says that if the APP is intermittently malfunctioning it will set 84 and produce poor performance.

Is it possible that my hard start and subtle roughness is just the pcm responding to the intermittent APP????

I am getting really creative hunting this problem. The Codes were not set and Mil was not on I found the codes in history. I have never seen the Mil light on during any of my troubleshooting accept of course when I caused it on purpose.

History is what happened in the past, maybe with PO,it should have no bearing on present problem, otherwise it would have been a present or pending DTC.

You say you got big leak. Was the clear IP return line empty?

Yup even after replacing all the lines under the intake that had cuts in them. One of the little injector lines had a little shininess to it and when I pulled a little it wiggled and leaked. After I fixed that one the line has been full for 2 hours now.

Your crossing both fingers friend,

Your crossing both fingers friend,
