Hard start when "warm"

starts easy when cold or at full operating temperature but if I leave sit for an hour or so it takes frequent restarts and seems to starve for fuel. The work around is to leave it running. It should be noted that the fuel tank is mounted in the bed and is higher than the fuel manager. It does it with DinoD and any blend of BioD
 
Have you tried pouring cold water on the IP? If it helps the IP is worn.
 
I thought of that as well Leo but he said it starts fine hot. sounds like it's only an issue if it's been sitting while warm. I'd like to see a fuel pressure reading
 
I'm thinking it's not happy with the tank that high up and puts a bubble of air in there.
 
Hook a a clear return line off IP and check for air after or during startup.
Is the return line submerged in the 'custom' tank?
Where is the PMD?

Check every single inch of rubber hose for swelling or kinking. Biodiesel does some nasty stuff to fuel hose. I had a bad kink behind the FFM that would shut the engine down.

nope, gonna go take care of that tomorrow, the PMD is a Leroy Bumper kit and I'll scrounge some clear tube

A bad IP will start fine cold and within 5 or so minutes of shut down. After shut down the pump heat soaks and the tolerance in the pump lets it bleed down and not build pressure. Cold water on it shrinks the housing and tightens up the bore and the plungers can build pressure. I have had 6 trucks in with the exact symptom.

So worst that will happen is one morning it won't start? I havn't got around to fixing the return line so I'll wait and see. When it does go the truck is for sale for parts unless someone wants now while they still can drive it home or at least up the roll back.
 
No, cold starts will get harder and harder. I had a customer go for 6 months carrying jugs of water. Come January when the water would freeze he finally did the pump.

well the cold start now is just a bump of the key and it's running so maybe I'm good until next winter
 
I haven't it's thrown any water on it, it's easier just leave the beast running with the heat or ac on. at 1.30 to 2.30 a gallon I can afford to do that now.
 
You cursed me! My truck wouldn't restart after a quick trip into the department store today. Go back in and buy a gallon of water, dump it on the IP and off she goes.

LOL, I got tired of doing that, finally replaced my IP and no more planning my stops, I only carried 3 jugs of water, so 3 stops, :mad2:
 
I'm back home now, corrected the fuel plumbing issues. I ran the beast and got it up to operating temp. waited a half hour and tried the restart. She restarted with protest but smoothed out. Ambient temp was 68F. My new question is how long can I expect it to keep functioning tell she stops for good? When I use it for chores I leave it run until I'm done for the day. It's not the primary transport and don't need it for work.
 
There is no way to tell. I have seen them go months and I have seen them go for days.
