Hard start today.

Hey Michael, what's goin' on?? It's been a while, -sorry to hear that thing is giving you fits.

Any update on symptoms? Did the PS do the trick??

Something I think you might want to check is fuel fittings (sometimes air can leak-in when they sit), and to check for voltage at each and every glow plug terminal.

I had a couple of bad (broken) wires on my glow wires that caused me lots of troubleshooting grief some time ago (lots of cold cylinders and smoke on a cold start). Since fixing those wires and installing the 60G's, -problem solved.

How's school goin??

OK,

I know what to do. It's just a guess you are reading on the internet, so take it for what it's worth.

I'm thinking that you just replaced the motor, you've got a loose hoseclamp between the IP and the fuel tank somewhere. It's allowing a little air in after it sits for a couple hours.

No big whoop.

That's my theory.

Yep, -I battled that once myself also. It sure doesn't take much air in the fuel system to make it misbehave, that's for sure....

Hey Rich! Well its gotten a little better since i started this thread. I replaced the CTS and that DID help a little, at first when i would cold start it wanted to idle at about 600ish rpm, i replaced it and it actually goes to high idle cold. So that helps now. However i still do have a smokey start. It is grayish/blueish smoke, runs rough for a bit like skipping off hits for about 10-15 seconds. It does burn a little oil still, about a quart every oil change. Which i heard is normal. I think me rotating the rings in the #8 slot is a little of a factor also. I really think you hit the nail on the head Veg with the air getting in the fuel line. Some times i will start it and it will almost die but pick right back up. This happens more when it isnt warm but its not cold either. So i think it is a fuel/air issue. The fuel line is new from the transmission to the i/p. So if it is leaking it is between the tranny and the tank. I still havent put in a fuel pressure gauge, its plumbed for one but plugged currently due to money issues. I have checked and cycles power with a test light to each glow plug and they are powered up right. I also replaced the PMD again due to stalling. The other one was less than a year old, so i found one in the basement out of my 4 spares. And so far its been 2 months and no stalling. Its been an average of 12 degrees here so i havent touched the truck in a while. 20 credit hours of school, work, and a new gf take up a ton of time....2 more years of school to go. BTW, my nice cat yellow engine is looking pretty bad, the rust is already taking its toll. The manifolds are all ready rusting. Pretty depressing...... Wow i need to update my miles in my sig. Been so busy lately.... I hit 213k yesterday.

Michael, -sounds like you've been busy! Give me a call sometime so we can chat, -it's been a while!!

If having issues unplug both the CTS and the IAT sensor on the first start of the day. The PCM uses both to determine glow plug time and cold advance. If air is only 25F and you unplug CTS to make it think its -40F, it wont fool the PCM. It takes the greater of the two on startup.

Having them both unplugged will give max glow and max advance. Depending on if it changes your issue for the better or worse gives some clues.

Keeping these things looking good is a yearly chore in the salt belts....

My new best friend is a spray bottle filled with diesel.... I spray it on the utility body and wipe it 'in' with a rag... looks like new, and keeps the rust at bay, and keeps the salt from digging into the rust. Problem is it gets addictive and makes you reek of diesel............. The smell leaves the surface of the truck overnight.
