GMC vs Chevrolet

Basically looks...

GMC looks better for the most recent(07.5) and the last generation(99-07)...that honor changes with different generations of these trucks...when it comes to the years with the 6.5's (88-98)the Chevrolet looks the best... before then they looked too similar except to have a preference... JMHO

Really, you think so? I think the last best looking bowtie is the 71 & 72. Otherwise I like the look of the GMCs.

My GMC 2500 Has cast iron A frames for the lower front suspension, My Chevy 2500 has pressed steel a frames there. making the GMC the more robust of the 2. Both are the 8 bolt versions.

Not all parts interchange i found out, especcially interior and trim. front corner lenses and grill parts wont fit either between the 2. The front drive shafts have diff lenghts too.

This is what i've been told........Seems strange, but they are more alike than not.

Close... I really liked the '69 and '70 ;)
Don't forget the '01-'02 Chev HDs. Great looking front end and hood:thumbsup:

If gm only made one truck instead of 2 ford would be #2 best selling
IIRC, in all but 1 year of the last 15 or so, if you added the Chev and GMC together, they outsold Ford.

My GMC Sub has a lift up rear window and drop gate, which I prefer to the barn doors (just personal preferance). It seems to me I've seen most of these in GMC's, with barn doors in nearly every Chevy.

just bought a 95 GMC burb' with the barn doors........the rear tailgate/doors were options for both chevy and gmc

I have owned Both GMC's and Chevy's of the same model

They are Identical trucks in the mechanical dept with a few minor differences here and there but all parts interchange.

The differences I have seen over the years is of course "Badging" "Grill designs" "Head light configuration"

Some of the trim packages will have different "Mix and Match" goodies.
The notion that the GMC was heavier duty is an old wives tale that probably got started back in the Dark ages.

I do remember a 91 GMC Burb that I owned a while back. This truck had the same outside electric side mirrors as the 92 (New body style) trucks. The mirrors were
mounted to a little bracket instead of to the door.

I have seen this on a few GMC Burbs but not on a chevy Burb

That truck had a few other transistion model items that I have never seen on a chevy.

Its all the same stuff ya know.
If you find some goodies on a GMC that you like you can retrofit the stuff to your Chevy.

A friend of mine cracked the grill on his GMC Burb and found a lovely CHROME chevy grill cheap YUP bolts right on. (95 truck)

I have owned Both GMC and Chevy Pickups and Burbs. In the dark they all look the same, HAAAAAAAAA

The front control arms are "Forged steel" not cast iron (sorry) but iron would not live in that spot.

These items were changed during production runs and done so to save on costs.

There may have been an engineering reason too but I suspect cost was the chief reason.

The Barn door/Tail gate thing is strictly an option choice in the list of a huge number of options.
We had 2 identical Burbs right down to the color (6.5 TD)
Same 8600 GVW and all. One had barn doors one had the gate and flip window. That was the only difference.

I have sat down with the option book and ordered a new Burb before and speced out exactly what I wanted.

There is a huge amount of little goodies that area available.

Some options require you to order a particular package to get.
Other stuff does not require a package.

Most rigs are ordered by the dealers for stock and they simply order a common "RPO" group (one that sells well)

Common engine and tranny combinations, trim packages, gear ratios, Paint colors, etc.

Other than the badging and grill designs most stuff is available across the lines. (at least in recent years)

Yes,the whole grill will fit,but the individual parts wont.like the orange corner lenses and bottom mount strip.

Forged steel is often refered to as "cast" in my experience(i should have used the word steel instead of Iron)(sometimer:smile5:)

In my area there are more older GMC's on the road than Chevy's.
Visa versa, there are more chevy's in the wrecking yards than GMC's.
Coincedence?

My GMC's have always seemed to be better trucks and there is NO logical reason for it. Coincidence ?? Or the Illusion of Coincidence....Remember they all look the same but there was some that rolled off the assmbly line with a bit more ...
Is it coincidence that my wife's name is "Christine" ? or the illusion of coincidence ?

I always thought they were the same truck with a different appearance package on them. Last time i was looking at a new truck, i looked at both and eventually bought the GMC because i thought it looked better in the grill area. Now i own that GMC, and 2 Silverado's (2-1993's and 1-1997) and aside from the trim, look at them as the same truck. After running 2 of them for over 210,000 each i can attest that they are durable if not abused heavily.

After 72 pretty much all the same as stated.

What I thought was great in the 67-72 trucks is that Chevy has the rear trailing arm suspension and GMC has the traditional leaf spring. In my mind the BEST Chevys were the 67-72 line-up because of the better ride given by the trailing arms.

I suspect GM cheaped out and went to leafs in 73+ to save money on mass production.

My 71 C-10 rides like a Caddy :)

That setup didn't fare well in the Northeast. Roadsalt rotted them pretty badly on evey one I've ever seen but then again most stuff doesn't hold up too good to our nuclear salt.

Didn't chevy, way back in the day, actually have splash lube motors, and GMC has had pressure lube? (I think like 50s or 60s, might actually be 2-tons only, idk)

IMHO, GMC has always had a more refined look. gotta say, on 94-2000 GM HD pickups, the GMC looks better, and IMHO, would let a bit more air in the cooling stack.

Aces, I didn't think the bottom 1' of the cars were even delivered on new cars up there? LOL Seems most long term NE and mid westish cars have very little left on the bottoms.

Salt is a bitch.

Yeah. I know about the ones you spoke of cause I had a c10 with that setup. I loved the truck but the beams rotted out. Nothing lasts up here.

Salt is a bitch.

The guys in New England get it worse than NY, but............On top of all that, I park my truck literally 150 ft. from the Atlantic Ocean (Jamaica Bay).....Trust me the Salt content in the water and air are the same....The Channel in my back yard is about 150 yards wide and 35-50 ft deep in some spots.

It's murder on everything, especially unpainted/unteated surfaces.

OH I know that. My camper was parked in Amityville and the underneath looks like it saw many new england winters and that thing was never driven in bad weather.

Any time I've ordered any frontend or plow stuff for my truck, the parts books list stamped or cast control arms. I don't know whether it's steel or iron or what, but it is solid and has casting marks all over it. And it's the heavier of the two.
