GMC vs Chevrolet

The burb is a GMC. The Tahoe is a Chevy.

I see no differences other than the logo. Features, trim, function, layout, etc. all the same. The GMC looks slightly different because of the badging and the monochromatic grill color scheme.

Basically looks...

GMC looks better for the most recent(07.5) and the last generation(99-07)...that honor changes with different generations of these trucks...when it comes to the years with the 6.5's (88-98)the Chevrolet looks the best... before then they looked too similar except to have a preference... JMHO
 
Here's a brief overview...

Although GMC and Chevrolet trucks are mostly identical, their differences have varied throughout the years. While Chevrolet is sold solely at Chevrolet dealers, GMC are made available to franchisees of Buick, Pontiac, Cadillac. GMC have slight trims differences from Chevrolets (i.e. grille, emblems, and other minor aesthetics). Between 1962 and 1972, most GMC vehicles were equipped with quad-headlights, while their Chevrolet counterparts were equipped with dual-headlights. Starting in 1973, with GM’s introduction of the new "rounded line" series trucks, GMC and Chevrolet trucks became even more similar, ending production of GMC’s quad-headlight models, and setting the standard for the Chevrolet/GMC line of trucks for over thirty years. During this period, the sister models of the two companies (Silverado/Sierra, Blazer/Jimmy, Tahoe/Yukon, etc) shared everything except trims and price. GM has recently begun a divergence in design between the two lines with the 2007 model Silverados and Sierras, which have slight differences in the shapes of their body panels and overall looks.
Today, for the most part, GMC offers the same trucks available under the Chevrolet brand.
 
its a lot easier to speak to people who have no knowledge of cars or trucks whats so ever and tell them you have a chevy truck than a gmc truck. they know what a chevy is since its more popular
 
Actually I gotta point out some differences. Back in the early 70's The Chevys came with the Modular rear and the GMC's had a Dana 60. I think the Chevy setup was actually better. I owned both. Also there were a few very rare 72 chevy 4x4 3/4 tons that came with auto's . I do not believe GMC ever did in those trucks.
 
kinda along the lines of why there was a Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable for a number of years. Identical cars.

At a time in the past there were actual differences, but as the parent companies try to cut costs they soon end up with clone vehicles.

Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon/Isuzu i-370 = identical pickup. Why bother??? Seems a waste to me.
 
My GMC 2500 Has cast iron A frames for the lower front suspension, My Chevy 2500 has pressed steel a frames there. making the GMC the more robust of the 2. Both are the 8 bolt versions.

Not all parts interchange i found out,especcially interior and trim. front corner lenses and grill parts wont fit either between the 2. The front drive shafts have diff lenghts too.
 
My GMC Sub has a lift up rear window and drop gate, which I prefer to the barn doors (just personal preferance). It seems to me I've seen most of these in GMC's, with barn doors in nearly every Chevy.

My understanding was that the gvw is what affected those differences.At least according to my local Napa parts man.

That is correct, according to what I have learned.

I think in the past GMC had more of a work-truck image, and Chevy was the fancier of the two. That seems to have changed in recent years, it seems to me the GMC is now the "classier" truck. I know back in the 80s/90s the GMCs were generally more commonly built as work trucks, for instance they had primarily th400s for trannies when most all Chevies had the 700r4. You could get either/or, but it just was more common that way.
Personally I have always preferred the look of chevy grilles over GMC, but it's obviously just a matter of personal preference. Underneath they are all the same, or able to be optioned the same. Until you get into limited edition options such as the Denali, rear-steer and such.
