Glow plugs swollen... can't get tips out through injector port!

OK... I just got this truck a couple of days ago, and already I'm thinking about killing it.

The truck had *something* happen, where all the plugs ended up swelling up. I've stuggled with just this one plug, and need assistance. I pulled the injector, and lassoed the tip of the plug. I pulled the threads off, and tried knocking it into the precomp port to pull it out. Nada. Seems like the plug is a little too long to slip back out the GP opening.

I'm afraid of having to pull the heads (My First Diesel), but I can't see any way to take care of it. I've attached a pic with the hope someone has a better idea.

Fish a rag under the tip of the glow plug, then snap off the tip of the glow plug.

Did it unthread all the way and it was just stuck? If that is the case "Burning Oil" who is a member here sells an extractor.

If the plug broke off and the tip is stuck just drive it into the precup with a punch, use a rag as stated above.

I broke the spade connector tip off, the threaded part, and a 3/4 chuck of copper off the end. What's left is a tube-like piece with some wire to fish it back out. I tried driving it in with a punch, but it seems like it hits the other side of the chamber (stopping further movement).

If it was completely unthreaded and just the tip is left try drilling it then punch it into the precup.

Get the other end of the plug up. The plug will not make a u-turn in the chamber. So the threaded end may have to come out the injector hole first. I am guessing you are attempting to pull the bottom end out first?

If the plug comes out the glow plug hole and then sticks, break it off, and shove the rest back into the hole on the rag/paper towel you put into the precup to catch it. Wire is a complicated idea. Use it as you have it, but, still put a paper towel in there as it is proven and described above.

The original glow plugs were known to swell without anything being 'wrong'.

If any threads are left it will spin it into the precup. Drilling will allow the tip to collapse in on itself making it easier to punch in.

It's a bit like removing a rivet, they can be really tight but after drilling a hole they can be driven out of their hole.

Only thing left is the glow plug element... Seems like it's too long for the precup to drop out. I guess I'm having a hard time visualizing this. I guess doing this one will be easier on the others.

Here's what I have:

A pic of the shell, nut with threads, turned on it's side showing the hole through it would be priceless.

Usually they break. First I have seen of the shell coming completely off the plug (but my engines usually don't have more than half of the element length left on removal.) I would normally suspect the part sticking out is binding up on the way in. Possible the complete length plug element to the spade connection is too long to fall in. After all the plug usually breaks the element completely off at the threads somewhere so you have an unusually long problem with a complete length element.

If you feel it hit...

Look up the removal tool it may help.

Myself not wanting to buy a tool and not waiting for it to arrive:
I would break off the parts extending out of the head. Air chisel etc. Then pound or drill it in. They are fragile ceramic with a steel shell. Lots of debris will be caught in the rag in the precup. Care would be taken for the threads, but, the element is weaker than the threads.

Probably WAP's. It's not that hard to pull the heads if you have to. The valve train is fixed not adj lke SBC so that is easy enough

OK.... So I got it out. Apparently, it's a steel shell with a coiled conductor inside. When I pulled it out, it looked like a trumpet, missing the rounded tip (I'm assuming this is long gone). I shoved some cotton rag in the precup, and pulled the GP back through the GP hole (forcing it to draw the material back in). Whew. Now I've got 7 more like that.

So... Does anyone have the fancy glow-plug puller tool to lend out? I'd sure be appreciative.... :D

Welcome to the site.
You are replacing the glow plugs with bosch aren't you? Don't forget to anti-seize the threads on the new ones.
You may want to have the injectors tested as long as you have them out. A injector install kit with clampless return hoses makes life easier also.
