Glow Plug relay

The GP relay is close to firewall on driver side rear of intake. It has two heavy ring connectors and a 4 or 5 pin (I think) connector on it.

Jim, Trace the wire from #8 GP to the buss bar that ties that bank together and then from there to the relay. You'll need to pull the fender liner. This thread may help

Signature.
Click above on 'forum actions', 'edit profile', then on the left in 'my settings' you'll see your sig button. Put in the info on your truck and all the mods you have. That way we know you have an '04 (LB7 or LLY?) body style tires exhaust, etc.
All that text under the pic of my '69 is my sig.

Back on topic.
Are you getting volts to the GP connectors when you do a key cycle and have the wait to start light? If it was me, I would work backward from there with a volt meter.

Look for a PM Jim

^^What Mike said.
BTW the glow plugs operate off of 4.7(?) volts... you will not see 12v at the glow plugs. I believe they are PWM also, so a standard voltmeter may or may not work properly.

This is on the 04.5+ glow plugs, LB7's used a regular 12 volt plug. Another reason why we need to know what you have to tell you how to test it. Also need to know if it is a federal or california emissions truck if it is an LB7.

Right, I just updated my sig. Although it wouldn't let me tyPe enough in it to include my dads truck which is the one were workin on, it's an 04 lb7 2500 hd non cal emissions .

Try editing your sig and add the extra details. Lots of sigs are longer than yours.

P0380 on a federal emissions LB7 is almost always the glow plug controller. It is the little black box on the top rear drivers side of the engine. It used to cost $70 from GM for the whole assembly with the 2 relays(intake air heater and glow plugs). The relays by themselves are $120 EACH from GM or aftermarket for the GM style ones, but a 70 amp HD relay will work and can be had for about $15. I'm currently using a 70 amp relay from CARQUEST that is actually a FORD relay. It was $13 and has been going strong for over 2 years now.

Well no signs of rubbing or damage to any wiring , checked power at gp's and found #2 #3 and # 5 have no power during
Key cycle all others are getting 12v, ordered a gp control module.

All of the glow plugs on a federal emissions truck are powered off of a busbar set-up. #8(drivers side rear) gets the power first then up to #2, then a jumper wire carries it over to #1 and back to #7. For a federal emissions truck the P0380 is tripped whenever no voltage is detected coming out of the relay(no power to any glow plugs). This is normally a bad relay, but can also be a bad fuse. If it is a cali emssions truck, it is a whole differrent animal all together and powers each glow plug individually. A p0380 on a CALI truck means there is either a failed glow plug or no power coming out of the glow plug controller. Cali emissions glow plug systems rarely have a failed glow plug controller as it is normally a bad glow plug that trips the code. This is why I said we need to know what you have as there is 2 completely differrent glow plug systems for these trucks. Also keep in mind that trucks sold in the northeast(New England states) also have teh Cali emissions system on them.
