I've consulted with Raceday about this. He has given me some great advice for fabricating my own harness. Has anyone else custom made their own? What materials did you use? I'm hoping to get this done on the weekend. Also hoping these things are easy to get at your just a bit better then average parts store.

Thanks fellas:thumbsup:

Can RD or you share the info in detail please.....Maybe sticky material.

RD seems very knowledgeable.....on top of being "Rusty," Nascar Certified!

Post it up or PM me the details....(If RaceDayMechanic, has no objections, of course).....Seems we all need GP harness upgrades, especially in these winter months.

Also RD works with some very severe duty products that we might not be aware of.......Waiting patiently and very curious!

X2 on this! I've got 230K miles on mine and I would tend to guess the harness is still origional.

Oh, I didn't think it was a big secret lol. He said use heat rated wire. I was wondering what other people had used assuming someone else has already done this.

Already ahead of you there. Now I'm looking for answers on what wire people have used. RDM suggested a heat rated wire. I'm asking others if they have done it, what did they use that you can get at the parts store to work. Have you changed yours JMJ?

Looking at that other attachement enlarged though makes me wonder if I have some burned fusible links. Good thing it warmed up here today. Might jump under the hood to have a look.

I have not changed mine. It is still good. My mileage is still very low only a little more than 118K.

Things do not get rusted too fast here in the South.

Well, north of the 49th its cold and stuff gets rusty and corroded. Explains half of my problems with my truck. I should wire up an override switch so I can test this :mad2:. End result would be I would have it when it gets really cold...

Here is a link to a very good supplier of wire and connectors http://order.waytekwire.com/productdetail2/M50/WX12-0/12GA SXL AUTOMOTIVE WIRE/ If you have the old harness use it as a template to build the new one add some length to the leads and route it like I did mine and it will be out of harms way alot better

That engine is absolutely gorgeous! Thank you very much for all the info! I really didn't think the wire was that much. But you get what you pay for.

What about fusible links?.....Isn't there one on each side where the 2 sides split off from the GP controller?......And the wire is just heat rated, or fuseable link wire?

All the fusable links except the 2 next to the controler are just fuseable wire. RD put no circuit protection whatsoever on his harness. Rather risky in my opinion. These circuits use close to 100 amps. Very quick fire if shorted.

^^^^^......If I remember correctly, a members pass side wires burnt up before the fusible link blew......Anyone?

Yeah that happened to mine as well. I went in and replaced glow-plugs. I realized after removing half the front in to get to it all that the two wires under the turbo had melted at the useable link. That put me down to only one plug working on that side. Was a whole new animal when the new plugs went in and the harness repaired! Reading this has got me thinking of a harness mod for mine. What would happen if one were to use one large wire and then branch all the individually plug wires in a slight smaller wire off of it? On the large wire I was thinking something close to what the stock battery cable is.

The wires are fuseable wires. They are supposed to melt if there is a overload such as shorted glow plug or a wire melted to ground. No fuseable links and fuseable wire and it will simply catch on fire. I really don't believe GM would go to this much trouble[and expense] to protect these circuits if it weren't necessary.

On the glow plug harness are there any other wires branching off (to sensors wts light ect.?) or do they just run to the glow plugs? Looking at mine I can't believe the wire is so small coming from the relay.

Yes, there is a blue[i believe] wire that runs to the ecm to tell it the glows are working. I believe it comes from the passenger side bank.
The fuseable wire serves as a fuse for each glow plug. The fuseable link for each bank won't blow from one shorted glow plug. The wires to the individual glow plugs would be on fire long before the link blows. The fuseable link before the controler is there incase the controller shorts out or gets too hot[i've seen them melted.]
It's your rig do what you want. Mine will all have a set-up similar to the factory one.
