girdle or mess with splayed mains

The OP referenced Kennedy, who sells DSG Girdles. DSG's website states "The kit contains a CNC-machined, powder coated set of girdles to tie the three middle caps together."

So I would say the manufacturer says they are. If you look at the picture, it looks like the entire girdle is black.

I looked at the DSG picture I would guess its not powder coated, and it says nowhere that it is. I'm afraid somebody misled you. I would think anybody that designs a girdle would be smart enough not to powder coat or paint it ,especialy on the mounting surfaces.

If you click on the more info link it's there.

The DSG Stud Girdle Kit avoids this common problem by replacing the outer main bearing bolts on the three middle webs with high tensile studs and nuts. By joining these webs together the studs eliminate the spreading force put on the block while torquing the main caps. The kit contains a CNC-machined, powder coated set of girdles to tie the three middle caps together.

What are you on about? It clearly states POWDER COATED right on their website! CLICK HERE FOR THE BRUTAL TRUTH

My gosh, quit guessing and try reading instead of just looking at the pictures. No one misled me. Its there for any and all to see. We do agree on one thing, anyone that powder coats a girdle is not very smart.

im contumplating haveing one made i know a good machinest (non-automotive).

my reasons are
whats it made out of? mild steel dosent sound like a good plan to me.
now this about the dsg one being powdercoated. i want all things inside my engine to be bare metal!
im not sure that something like a 1X1X3/16 angle would be enough im thinking it needs to be heavier or made of something stronger like chromoly or maybe even a 300 series stainless?
any thoughts????

I can provide the blueprint of the girdle on my 6.2l. Only problem with the one on mine is it requires a custom pan.

I must be blind,I see it now. To bad its not just paint ,powder coating is hard to remove,I guess they think its ok.

ya i remerber you saying that. why is that?

The girdle cover all 5 mains and the front of the pan will not clear.

and this is what MaxPF (the man who designed and built it) says about the girdle;

"For those who have the resources to roll their own, here is the blueprint for the left-side girdle. The right side is simply a mirror image. Also, the print doesn't show it, but the corners on the girdle that sit in the corners on the caps need to be chamfered to clear the radius on the caps. One caveat: the stock pan will NOT fit over this girdle. You will have to radius the front of the girdles (see my pics in previous posts) either have to modify the pan or build a custom pan. I am trying to mod my pan, but it is made of 2 layers of sandwiched metal with (apparently) a coating of some kind between them. It contaminates the welds, and I may not be able to get good clean (and leak-free) welds on it. I will keep everyone updated on my success or failure. If it won't weld cleanly I plan on fabricating a pan from aluminum sheet. The other option is to eliminate the part of the girdle in front of the #2 bulkhead. However, the rear corners still need to be angled (that isn't shown in the prints either, but it is in my pics), and you will still need to figure out how to make the dipstick clear (I plan on simply moving the dipstick tube lower in the pan). No matter what, it is a PITA. I still think it is worth it, though "

mikey do you have the ARP part number for the studs, or can you get it from MaxPF. i think if i call ARP and tell them i what i need they can find it but its just easier with part numbers i do know that they are 12x1.75 (just ran a theread chaser throught them) and i would assume that if i measure a bolt that would get me close on the length

just got home from a weekend of partying and poker. I will look and see if I can find a part number later today. I am almost positive he special ordered them. I know the kit that dsg sells has arp studs as well.

here is what I found on MaxPF's original build thread over at CK5.

Today I spent another $355 on fasteners I had to contact ARP's special order department for the main studs since they don't have a main stud kit for the 6.2/6.5, and I needed 1/2" longer studs on the outboard holes to accomodate the girdle. They ended up having off-the-shelf parts that were close enough to work. I will need to trim the coarse thread side of the studs down a bit, but that's no big deal. I also ordered the head stud kit for the 6.2/6.5 application.

well i still dont know what im going to do?????!!!!! im about ready to say the hell with it and put it back together with the stock bolts i mean hell my old motor had a huge crack in the mainweb and i dont think that had any thing to do with piston detonation that killed my block i thing it was from lack of oil which i still dont know where it went. plus i am really starting to want my truck back really bad its been sence November that i drove it. some one please help me deside what to do

the question im asking is what would you do?
