Getting my CUCV today!

Kenny, isnt that only on the pick ups? All the CUCV "blazers" Ive worked with have a single tank in the back and the space tire inside the cab in the back?

Duh....I was thinking my truck. You are correct. IIRC they made a bigger aftermarket one. I think there was even a bigger factory one on the gassers. I don't remember what my Jimmy had but think it was 26 gal.

Ok, explain the following to me since I'm diesel ignorant. These are the results of the compression test as written on the repair order, no units given:

1: 280
2: 279
3: 275
4: 275
5: 281
6: 278
7: 271
8: 279

Whats it mean and is that decent? I'm told that a new engine is 300... Thoughts?

EDIT: Ok, I looked up the tech data from the CUCV General Support manual posted in another post here on the forum and this is what I found:

Something's off here. All 8 cylinders were so close in compression that I'm having a hard time believing that the cylinders are all that far out of tolerance, besides which the truck runs and sounds great.

First off you are using a Diesel compression tester right? My Diesel compression tester goes from 0 to 1,000 psi on the gauge. Gasser compression testers that only go up to ~300 will not work.

Slow cranking perhaps? Did you do the test with all 8 glowplugs removed? My blazer's compression was higher than that, and that's after sitting for a decade. The lowest cylinder pressure i had was ~360 psi, highest was 400.

My blazer has a 31 gallon fuel tank. That's plenty for me to have to fill up. I'd think the OP's blazer should have the same size tank right?

I was thinking about the 2 tank setup. what about using the same valve setup as the veggie burners?

I don't see why you could have the 31 gallon in there. that'd get you and easy 500 miles.

So a couple of silly questions:

1) How exactly do you jumpstart it if its still got the 24V system?

2) Rather than jump it, should I just take out the batteries and charge them?

3) The other day, it was 15 degrees F and it took several minutes for the WAIT light indicating the glow plugs had heated up to extinguish. Thoughts? The mechanic just put new glow plugs in it. Is it possible he could have put 12v plugs vice 24?

You can jump start a 24v from a 12v. Just make sure you connect to 1 Battery only not across both. Long glow time means cold engine. That is normal. It's not likely someone put 24v glows in. I am still in disbelief at the idiots that did mine. The 24v glows have round connector. the 12v have flat spade. To put 24v in you would have to cut all the connectors off or make adaptors.. If your glows have flat spade connectors they are 12v however they maybe wellmans which I personally don't like. You can also charge the batterys with a 12v charger without removing or disconnecting them but if you are unsure then disconnect them. Basically make sure you are hooked up to only one battery at a time and you will be fine.

6.2s had a serp belt setup ? My 91 Jimmy was V Belt. V Belts suck on these engines. Ever since Gates Screwed everyone by discontinuing "8" series belts(7/16 thick) these trucks won't hold an Alt belt for squat. Gates does make a beefed up Alt belt for the 6.2. PArt # 5725 IIRC but it aint a whole lot better. These pulleys were designed for 7/16 thick belts and 13/32(7 series) doesn't cut it .

Seems odd to me that my 89 2500 had a serpentine and your 91 didn't. I find that surprising.

I'm selling my 89 to Adam. Maybe you could buy the serpentine set up from him after he gets it home.

Differant, but I would still think the serpentine set up would swap. You'll have to get in touch with Adam - as far as I'm concerned the truck is his unless he tells me he's changed his mind.
I'm not up to taking the parts off at the moment.
You can check my post of the 89 2500 for sale and find him there.
Thanks
If things change I'll post.
