gear drive

My project engine (if I ever get time to install it) has DSG gear drive in it, Scat crank, and Fluid Damper, my original engine still in the truck has it's original damper & chain/gearset 174K on it thus far, will get more time on it until I get the project engine installed. I think the fail of some dampers fail because of oil migration to the rubber softening it to point of fail, then cranks go when owners don't realize the issue.

I went with gears because of the Page's info & my builder liking them plus i got a "used but good set" low miles set for a good price, from another site member going mech IP not wanting/needing the DS-4 toothed timing gear.

Hmmm... I installed a stock timing set with chain. I think the money for the gear drive could be better spent elsewhere for those of us on a limited budget. Timing chains last a long time. Not as long as a good direct drive gear set (like the International Harvester 345 gasser in my Scout), but plenty long enough to keep me happy.

I agree, if its not in danger of breaking at 100k miles, I'd say thats fine with me too. I'm gonna slap a new chain in her when I do the Balancer... fluidampr? I think so.

A little food for thought; darn near every sprint car engine that I have built, worked on, dynoed or even know of all have gear drives. Yes most have the more expensive type that has the idler built onto the timing cover in some way but I have seen plenty of guys on budgets use the dual idler units.

I had the gesr set on my 6.5TD for 235K without issue. It will idle and start much better and the timing is a lot more stable as well. If building up and engine I highly recommend you get it balanced. Well worth the $150 to have it done and the engine runs so smooooth.
